Each year nearly 35,000 men are diagnosed and more than 10,000 die from prostate cancer, and figures are rising. It is number three in the causes of early death from cancer after breast cancer in women and lung cancer in both sexes. The good news is that better awareness, earlier diagnosis and more sophisticated treatments can save lives, and have already reduced death rates in some countries - eg, in America, death rates have fallen by 10% due to better education, despite incidence having risen. This new edition of Coping Successfully with Prostate Cancer describes the many treatments available and presents the latest research.

This illustrated book looks at the problem of prostate enlargement, and dispels many of the myths which surround it. The book is divided into three parts - understanding the illness and its symptons, investigating it and choosing treatment, and having an operation. It advises how to manage symptoms whilst waiting for surgery, about going into hospital, what to do before the operation, what it entails and the after-effects and likely effects on your sex life. The latter chapters deal with how to make a good recovery - re-training your bladder, exercising, and making sure you go for the necessary follow-up checks.

Important as it is to understand the risk factors concerning prostate cancer, one should also know there are many myths having no link to this disease. Probably the most consistent myth or misconception is that having non-cancerous conditions of the prostate increase the risk of developing prostate cancer. NOT true! Granted, these non-cancerous conditions may cause symptoms not unlike those of prostate cancer and deserve full evaluated by a physician. However, there is no evidence that having BPH or prostatitis increases the risk for developing prostate cancer. Numerous research studies have shown the presence of BPH is unrelated to prostate cancer. That being said however, for those of you who have received the diagnosis and need to understand more for your own piece of mind, this book is intended to educated, inform, and aid peace of mind. -- Back cover.

Men treated for localized prostate cancer have an excellent medical prognosis, but may have difficulty readjusting to life after surgery as a result of treatment related side effects. Changes in physical functioning and ongoing PSA monitoring due to the possibility of recurrence may bring added stress. Effective stress management is a key factor in increasing quality of life in this population and may play a role in maintaining overall health. Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management (CBSM) and relaxation training constitute the two components of this comprehensive program. Each session provides participants with stress management skills, including cognitive restructuring, coping strategies, and social support. Participants practice a variety of relaxation methods, such as progressive muscle relaxation, imagery, and meditation. Relevant issues for men having had prostate cancer, such as sexuality and communication, are also addressed. This guide is designed to be used in conjunction with the corresponding workbook, which includes in-session exercises, monitoring forms, and homework assignments. Group meetings combined with home practice facilitate the application of effective stress management and relaxation techniques to the everyday lives of participants. Together, the guide and workbook include all the material and information needed to successfully implement this program.
