Information on parameters like global ice volume or nutrient availability is critical for developing and testing models of climate and environmental conditions in the past few thousand years. However, reliable measurements of such parameters only go back about a century and, before the advent of satellites, were sparsely distributed across the planet. Instrumental records can be extended through the use of geochemical proxies in well-dated carbonate deposits, for example, Sr/Ca ratios in coral aragonite cores as a proxy for sea surface temperature. Due to ongoing advances in analytical and micro-sampling techniques, these proxies now comprise a multitude of elemental ratios, isotopic systems, and redox couples incorporated in carbonate minerals precipitated by numerous organisms and processes. Novel geochemical proxies in carbonate mineral records are being developed by scientists from an increasingly broad spectrum of fields and applied to an ever-growing number of environmental systems and questions, using a wide variety of advanced analytical instruments and methods. Concurrently, these developments are leading to new insights that enable established proxies to be reevaluated and improved. The time is right for a Research Topic that brings these experts together and helps them push their efforts forward by comparing notes, reviewing the present state of the science, and highlighting outstanding problems or controversies.

Marine Macrophytes As Foundation Species written by Emil Olafsson and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-25 with Nature categories.

Marine macrophytes (macroalgae, seagrasses, and mangroves) comprise thousands of species distributed in shallow water areas along the world’s coastlines. They play a key role in marine ecosystems regarding biodiversity and energy flow. A large proportion of macrophyte species can be characterised as ecosystem engineers—organisms that directly or indirectly affect the availability of resources to other species by modifying, maintaining, and creating habitats. This book is divided into three main themes: • Marine macroalgae and seagrasses as sources of biodiversity gives an overview of the diversity of the main organisms associated with macrophytes, and their functional role and interactions within their hosts. • Primary and secondary production of Macrophytes synthesizes research on food web structures derived from/or associated with, macrophytes and the transfer of macrophytic primary and secondary production from one ecosystem to another. • Threats to macrophytic ecosystem engineers addresses human-induced effects including eutrophication, physical destruction, invasive species, and global warming. The book is among the first one to concentrate on the value of macrophytes for the well-being of marine habitats. The book is aimed at academics but may be useful for students, policy makers, and laymen alike.

Handbook Of Ecological And Ecosystem Engineering written by Majeti Narasimha Vara Prasad and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-25 with Science categories.

Learn from this integrated approach to the management and restoration of ecosystems edited by an international leader in the field The Handbook of Ecological and Ecosystem Engineering delivers a comprehensive overview of the latest research and practical developments in the rapidly evolving fields of ecological and ecosystem engineering. Beginning with an introduction to the theory and practice of ecological engineering and ecosystem services, the book addresses a wide variety of issues central to the restoration and remediation of ecological environments. The book contains fulsome analyses of the restoration, rehabilitation, conservation, sustainability, reconstruction, remediation, and reclamation of ecosystems using ecological engineering techniques. Case studies are used to highlight practical applications of the theory discussed within. The material in the Handbook of Ecological and Ecosystem Engineering is particularly relevant at a time when the human population is dramatically rising, and the exploitation of natural resources is putting increasing pressure on planetary ecosystems. The book demonstrates how modern scientific ecology can contribute to the greening of the environment through the inclusion of concrete examples of successful applied management. The book also includes: A thorough discussion of ecological engineering and ecosystem services theory and practice An exploration of ecological and ecosystem engineering economic and environmental revitalization An examination of the role of soil meso and macrofauna indicators for restoration assessment success in a rehabilitated mine site A treatment of the mitigation of urban environmental issues by applying ecological and ecosystem engineering A discussion of soil fertility restoration theory and practice Perfect for academic researchers, industry scientists, and environmental engineers working in the fields of ecological engineering, environmental science, and biotechnology, the Handbook of Ecological and Ecosystem Engineering also belongs on the bookshelves of environmental regulators and consultants, policy makers, and employees of non-governmental organizations working on sustainable development.

Rhodolith Ma Rl Beds A Global Perspective written by Rafael Riosmena-Rodríguez and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-07 with Science categories.

Rhodolith beds are recognized internationally as a unique ecosystem, and they are the focus of this interdisciplinary book. These marine beds occur worldwide, from the tropics to the poles, ranging in depth from intertidal to deep subtidal habitats and they are also represented in extensive fossil deposits. In the light of international interest in rhodoliths and maerl concerning their role in coastal ecosystems and with respect to biodiversity, fisheries, and the production of sediment, this book provides the most comprehensive view possible. As readers will discover, rhodoliths/maerl are fundamental to a range of ecological processes, acting as ecosystem engineers including playing key roles in recruitment and providing nursery habitats. Rhodoliths/maerl have been used commercially in some parts of the world, and they are understood to be vulnerable to coastal modifications and human-induced change, and hence their status may serve as an indicator of ecosystem health. Rhodoliths/maerl contribute to global carbon budgets although the extent remains to be evaluated, as do the potential impacts of changing global climates and ocean acidification.
