The "SFCR Experts Series" represent a book series under the aegis of the French Spine Surgery Society (SFCR) and dedicated to the spine surgery. The aim of this first volume is to bring together all the fundamental concepts of spinal surgery, thus offering the spine surgeon an up-to-date overview of this field. To understand the present and anticipate the future, it is essential to know the past. The volume will therefore begin with the history of spinal surgery, describing the most significant milestones of this discipline. The present of spinal surgery will then be discussed, through the epidemiology of spinal practice and today's spinal pathologies. The fundamentals, including surgical anatomy, biomechanics, spinal instrumentation and biomaterials, the biology of bone fusion and bone substitutes, injuries and regeneration of the spinal cord, represent 'the heart' of the book and will subsequently be represented and illustrated within the pages by renowned experts. The economic environment is important for spinal surgery and the place and challenges of the spinal market will also be discussed. Finally, the section on data management, artificial intelligence, innovations and emerging technologies will provide the reader with perspectives and the future of spinal surgery. This first “SFCR Experts Series” volume will surely be greatly appreciated by neurosurgeons and orthopedists as an important contribution to the current knowledge of spine surgery.

Percutaneous Lumbar Discectomy written by H. Michael Mayer and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Medical categories.

Percutaneous lumbar discectomy is a new surgical method for treating lumbar disc diseases. The goal of the procedure is decompression of the spinal nerve root by percutaneous removal of the nucleus pulposus under local anesthesia. Probably 20 % of all patients requiring lumbar disc surgery can be successfully treated by this method. During the past two years, percutaneous discectomy has spread rapidly, and it is now performed in most clinical departments engaged in spinal surgery. The first International Symposium on Percutaneous Lumbar Discectomy, held in Berlin in August 1988, covered all current procedures known as "percutaneous discectomy" and the entire range of percutaneous techniques, both clinical and experimental. Its publication is important because of the recency of this new surgical procedure, the outstanding experience of the speakers - including the Japanese, American, and European "pioneers" of the technique - and last but not least the gaps in the knowledge of physicians concerning this topic. This procedure opens up new perspectives in the surgical treatment of degenerative diseases of the lumbar spine.

Minimally invasive spine surgery, in some form or other, has historical roots dating back more than 100 years, and recent advances in technology now make it increasingly effective in treating suitable spine patients. While minimally invasive approaches have shown to reduce muscle damage, blood loss, and post-operative pain, to perform this t ype of surgery correctly, even highly skilled modern-day surgeons must prepare themselves for a demanding learning curve. For this reason, AOSpine proudly presents Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery: Techniques, Evidence, and Controversies, the most comprehensive book of its kind, which includes more than 500 pages of surgical techniques, illustrations, case images, tips and tricks, and research, providing an invaluable tool for spine surgeons around the world. Each technique is fully examined: The pros and cons of each is objectively reviewed Its spectrum of indications and contraindications is summarized Historical and modern day controversies relating to each technique are discussed Uniquely, chapters in the text are further supported by an evidence-based section summarizing research studies, analysis, and conclusions into each technique, from peer-reviewed journals The text covers more than just a range of interesting medical techniques. By including brief historical introductions on each technique and the surgeons that explored and founded its methods, their early (sometimes self-made) instrumentation, right through to todays current best-practice, this book provides an interesting, informative, and topical instruction on minimally invasive surgery and its increasingly encouraging results for spine-patient care.
