En esta magna obra, por su extensión y contenido, Javier Barrientos Grandon efectúa un recorrido por el sistema de gobernación de la monarquía española, mediante el examen de los personajes que se integraron en el sistema polisinodial o de los consejos. Por orden alfabético, y para el período 1500-1836, la estructura de cada biografía asume un modelo general que, con las variaciones accidentales derivadas de la naturaleza peculiar de cada consejo y de los datos y noticias que ha sido posible adquirir, gira en torno al oficio y la jurisdicción. Este criterio rector determina que su estructura no sea necesariamente cronológica y, así, las biografías cubren los siguientes ámbitos: de la identidad de la persona del consejero (nombre, títulos y dignidad);de la naturaleza del consejero (origen y patria); de la suficiencia del consejero (edad y cualidades del alma y del cuerpo); de la muerte del consejero y del oficio como perpetuo; de la familia del consejero (méritos y servicios de familia); de los méritos y servicios del consejero en cuanto a letras, armas y papeles y, eventualmente, dignidades en la iglesia; de su elección e ingreso y del cese en el oficio. Los datos y noticias que se ofrecen por el autor en cada biografía están debidamente justificados en notas a pie de página, en las que se consignan las fuentes, documentales y bibliográficas, que se han tenido a la vista, lo que nos sitúa ante un trabajo excepcional por su rigor técnico y originalidad. Este libro aborda uno de los periodos más convulsivos e interesantes de la Historia Contemporánea de Antequera. Estamos ante un estudio historiográficamente virgen y una exclusiva editorial porque nunca antes se ha publicado nada de carácter monográfico al respecto durante los más de 200 años transcurridos desde los acontecimientos que se exponen en la obra. A lo largo de las páginas del libro, Francisco Luís Díaz Torrejón hace un recorrido por los principales sucesos, hechos y vicisitudes que definen la vida de Antequera en el periodo que transcurre entre marzo de 1808 y septiembre de 1812. Son los rangos cronológicos que delimitan la época histórica que estuvo marcada por el conflicto hispano-francés que ha pasado a la historia como Guerra de la Independencia. Con gran detalle, se analiza la realidad de la ciudad de Antequera durante los agónicos estertores del Antiguo Régimen, que se desmorona pese a la resistencia de la nobleza y la oligarquía local. Eran estamentos anclados en el tradicionalismo rancio y profundo; la explosión patriótica que inunda la localidad de sentimientos galofóbicos, después de la victoria de las armas españolas sobre las francesas en los campos de Bailén; el impacto de la ocupación napoleónica estableciendo un nuevo orden militar y político-administrativo que acarrea consecuencias traumáticas y trágicas; junto a los efectos del desastre económico y la crisis de subsistencia que suceden a los horrores de la guerra.

During the first millennium BCE, complex encounters of Phoenician and Greek colonists with natives of the Iberian Peninsula transformed the region and influenced the entire history of the Mediterranean. In this volume an international team of scholars builds up a comprehensive analysis of the fiscal history of Europe over six centuries. It forms a fundamental starting-point for an understanding of the distinctiveness of the emerging European states, and highlights the issue of fiscal power as an essential prerequisite for the development of the modern state. The study underlines the importance of technical developments by the state, its capacity to innovate, and, however imperfect the techniques, the greater detail and sophistication of accounting practice towards the end of the period. New taxes had been developed, new wealth had been tapped, new mechanisms of enforcement had been established. In general, these developments were made in western Europe; the lack of progress in some fiscal systems, especially those in eastern Europe, is an issue of historical importance in its own right and lends particular significance to the chapters on Poland and Russia. By the eighteenth century `mountains of debt' and high debt-revenue ratios had become the norm in western Europe, yet in the east only Russia was able to adapt to the western model by 1815. The capacity of governments to borrow, and the interaction of the constraints on borrowing and the power to tax had become the real test of the fiscal powers of the `modern state' by 1800-15.
