The ENAM2001 Conference was held on July 2-7, 2001 at the Rantasipi Aulanko Hotel in Hameenlinna in southern Finland. The conference was organized by the Department of Physics and the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla with support from the Physics Departments of the Universities of Helsinki and Turku. This conference, Exotic Nuclei and Atomic Masses has now gained the status of a major nuclear physics serial conference. The previous conference was held in Bellaire, Michigan, USA. The conference was first held in 1967 in Lysekil, Sweden, then entitled Conference on Nuclei Far from Stability. ENAM2001 welcomed 270 participants from 34 countries, including 17 accompanying per sons. The content of the program was selected based on the advice of the International Advisory Committee. The Committee members read and considered 253 submitted abstracts in selecting oral contributions. During the conference week 76 invited and oral talks were given. The rest of the contributions were presented in dedicated poster sessions. Many thanks go to the speakers of oral and poster presentations for their enthusiasm and for the high quality of their work which demonstrated the liveliness of the field. Participation in the lectures was high and contributions from the audience were important towards the success of this conference. The organizers would like to especially thank Cary Davids of Argonne National Laboratory for his comprehensive summary talk, which is also included in these Proceedings.

Despite the apparent complexity of nuclear structural evolution, recent work has shown a remarkable underlying simplicity that is unexpected, global, and which leads to new signatures for structure based on the easiest-to-obtain data. As such they will be extremely valuable for use in the experiments with low intensity radioactive beams. Beautiful correlations based either on extrinsic variables such as N{sub p}N{sub n} or the P-factor or correlations between collective observables themselves have been discovered. Examples to be discussed include a tri-partite classification of structural evolution, leading to a new paradigm that discloses certain specific classes of nuclei, universal trajectories for B(E2: w1 2!01) values and their use in extracting hexadecapole deformations from this observable alone, the use of these B(E2) values to identify shell gaps and magic numbers in exotic nuclei, the relationship of [beta] and [gamma] deformations, and single nucleon separation energies. Predictions for nuclei far off stability by interpolation will also be discussed.

This Ph.D. work falls within the scope of theoretical techniques tailored to the solution of the nuclear many-body problem. It was motivated by the perspective of using beyond-mean-field methods to improve the description of excitation spectra of stable and exotic nuclei, especially the low-energy states and the giant resonances. The chosen path in this direction is the development of models based on the second random-phase approximation (SRPA) used with a subtraction procedure. These developments aim to extend the range of applicability of the initial model and to include correlations in the ground state.A first part consists in applying the SRPA used with a subtraction method to the study of the dipole and quadrupole response in medium to heavy-mass nuclei, including the electric dipole polarizability. We verify that the subtracted SRPA corrects the problems observed with the standard SRPA model and improves the description of excitation spectra compared to the random-phase approximation (RPA). We also study beyond-mean-field effects that arise in the subtracted SRPA by exploiting the relation between the axial breathing modes in nuclei and the effective mass in nuclear matter.A second part is dedicated to extensions.As a first step, we extend the initial numerical tools by employing the equal-filling approximation (EFA), to enable the applications to nuclei with partially-occupied orbitals. We next propose a method to estimate part of the pairing effects using correlated occupation numbers.A study of possible ways to renormalize the subtracted SRPA is carried out by employing a model which goes beyond the quasiboson approximation. This extension also relies on the use of occupation numbers as a means to include ground state correlations. We show that correlations obtained from the computation of occupation numbers in iterative RPA calculations are not sufficient to address the standard SRPA drawbacks.
