Bose-Einstein correlations of[pi][sup+][pi][sup+] and[pi][sup[minus]][pi][sup[minus]] pairs collected by the BNL-E866 Forward Spectrometer in 11.6 A[center-dot]GeV/c Au+ Au collisions have been measured. The data were analyzed using three-dimensional correlation functions parameterized by the Yano-Koonin-Potgoretskii and Bertsch-Pratt formalism to study transverse momentum dependent source parameters. Rapid decreases of longitudinal source radii and slower decreases in the transverse parameters with increasing transverse momentum were observed, which suggests a strong longitudinal and some transverse expansion. A freeze-out time[tau][sub 0] was derived as 4.5--5 fm/c, under the assumption of the freeze-out temperature T= 130 MeV, and the duration of emission was found to be[delta][tau][approx] 2--4 fm/c.

The use of high-pT particles as calibrated probes has proven to be an effective tool for understanding the properties of the system produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In this thesis, two such measurements are presented using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC): 1. The transverse momentum spectra of charged particles produced near mid rapidity in Cu+Cu collisions with center-of-mass energies of 62.4 and 200 GeV per nucleon pair 2. Two-particle correlations with a high transverse momentum trigger particle (pT> 2.5 GeV=c) in Au+Au collisions at ... 200 GeV over the broad longitudinal acceptance of the PHOBOS detector ... In central Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV, the single-particle yields are suppressed at high-pT by a factor of about five compared to p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions. This is typically understood to be a consequence of energy loss by high-pT partons in the dense QCD medium, as such a suppression is absent in d+Au collisions. In Cu+Cu collisions, the nuclear modification factor, RAA, has been measured relative to p+p data as a function of collision centrality. For the same number of participating nucleons (Npart), RAA is essentially the same for the Cu+Cu and Au+Au systems over the measured range of pT, in spite of the significantly different geometries. At high-pT, the similarity between the two systems can be described by simple, geometric models of parton energy loss. Two-particle angular correlations are a more powerful tool for examining how highpT jets lose energy and how the medium is modified by the deposited energy. In central Au+Au collisions, particle production correlated with a high-pT trigger is strongly modified compared to p+p. Not only is the away-side yield much broader in, the nearside peak of jet fragments now sits atop an unmistakable 'ridge' of correlated partners extending continuously and undiminished all the way to = 4.

Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of photons and[pi][sup 0]s at mid-rapidity are studied as a function of collision centrality for[sup 197]Au+[sup 197]Au collisions at[radical]s[sub NN]= 130 GeV. Photon pair conversions have been reconstructed from charged tracks measured by the main Time Project Chamber of the STAR experiment at the RHIC heavy ion facility. The transverse momentum resolution of photons with this method is estimated to be[Delta]p[sub t]/p[sub t]= 2% at 0.125 GeV/c and 5% at 2.5 GeV/c. Photon spectra were measured up to a transverse momentum of 2.4 GeV/c between[+-] 0.5 units of rapidity. The dominant photon production mechanism, the[pi][sup 0][yields][gamma][gamma] decay, was measured between 0.25-2.5 GeV/c and[+-] 1 units of rapidity. Spectra are reported for the top 11%, 11-34% and 34-85% centrality classes. It was observed that in mid-central and central collisions the relative contribution of the[pi][sup 0][yields][gamma][gamma] decay to the inclusive photon spectrum decreases above a transverse momentum of 1.65 GeV/c. In central collisions the magnitude of the decrease from p[sub t]= 1.65 GeV/c to 2.4 GeV/c is 20%. It is unlikely that contributions from other[pi][sup 0] decay channels and other particle decays fully explain this decrease. The centrality dependence on the shapes of the[pi][sup 0] spectra was analyzed with Boltmann and Bose-Einstein functions. In the transverse momentum windows of the spectra, the extracted temperatures are near 0.295 GeV. These temperatures are substantially higher than those extracted from[pi][sup[+-]] spectra in a lower range of transverse momentum. This is an indication that the shapes of the pion spectra deviate from purely exponential shapes.

Experimental measurements from dihadron correlations triggered with very high-p[subscript]T particles in Pb+Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV are shown. The data set was collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 150 [mu]b−1. The use of high-p[subscript]T track triggers made it possible to study dihadron correlations up to p[subscript]T ~ 50 GeV/c. The presence of azimuthal anisotropies of final state particles in non-central Pb+Pb collisions gives rise to single-particle correlations that are characterized by the Fourier harmonics, v[subscript]n. To isolate the jet components of the correlations, the v2-v4 components are subtracted from the correlations and the per-trigger-particle associated-yields on the near and away side are studied. The data are compared to correlations from p+p collisions at the same center-of-mass energy over a wide range of trigger and associated-particle p[subscript]T and as a function of Pb+Pb event centrality. On the near-side there is evidence of moderate enhancement at low p[superscript]assc [subscript]T. On the away side there is a significant enhancement at p[superscript]assc [subscript]T ~ 0.5 GeV/c and at higher transverse momentum, p[superscript]assc [subscript]T > 3 GeV/c, there is a suppression of about 50% compared to p+p collisions.
