From ca. 1300 a new genre developed in European literature, Neo-Latin drama. Building on medieval drama, vernacular theatre and classical drama, it spread around Europe. It was often used as a means to educate young boys in Latin, in acting and in moral issues. Comedies, tragedies and mixed forms were written. The Societas Jesu employed Latin drama in their education and public relations on a large scale. They had borrowed the concept of this drama from the humanist and Protestant gymnasia, and perfected it to a multi media show. However, the genre does not receive the attention that it deserves. In this volume, a historical overview of this genre is given, as well as analyses of separate plays. The thirty chapters of this innovative international study are all devoted to the topic of the play within the play. The authors explore the wide range of aesthetic, literary-theoretical and philosophical issues associated with this rhetorical device, not only in terms of its original meta-theatrical setting - from the baroque idea of a theatrum mundi onward to contemporary examples of postmodern self-referential dramaturgy - but also with regard to a variety of different generic applications, e.g. in narrative fiction, musical theatre and film. The authors, internationally recognized specialists in their respective fields, draw on recent debates in such areas as postcolonial studies, game and systems theories, media and performance studies, to analyze the specific qualities and characteristics of the play within the play: as ultimate affirmation of the 'self' (the 'Hamlet paradigm'), as a self-reflective agency of meta-theatrical discourse, and as a vehicle of intermedial and intercultural transformation. The challenging study, with its underlying premise of play as a key feature of cultural anthropology and human creativity, breaks new ground by placing the play within the play at the centre of a number of intersecting scholarly discourses on areas of topical concern to scholars in the humanities.

In der deutschen Literatur des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit besitzt der Narr eine zentrale Rolle. Er erscheint als der Außenseiter, der die Ordnung der Gesellschaft und die herkömmlichen Denkweisen in Frage zu stellen vermag. Der Narr entzieht sich jedem Versuch einer eindeutigen Begriffsbestimmung. Unzählige Definitionsversuche zeugen von der Ratlosigkeit vor dieser schillernden Gestalt. Der Diskurs über den Narren mündet in die Reflexion über das Anderssein. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes gehen aus dem im März 2008 vom «Centre d'Etudes Germaniques Interculturelles de Lorraine» veranstalteten Kolloquium hervor. Sie versuchen, einen Gesamtüberblick über das Narrenmotiv im Mittelalter und der Frühen Neuzeit zu gewinnen. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Werke der deutschen Literatur, wobei auch Schriften gewürdigt werden, die unter diesem Blickwinkel bislang kaum berücksichtigt wurden. Verschiedene Perspektiven kommen zum Tragen wie die Mehrdeutigkeit des Terminus «Narr», die Beziehung zwischen Narrheit und Weisheit sowie die Vielfalt der Funktionen, die der literarische Narr innehat. Narren ermöglichen (oft kritische) Überlegungen über das Verhältnis des Menschen zu Gott, über die Legitimität der politischen Macht und nicht zuletzt über das Wesen der Literatur. Grundlegend ist auch der Bezug zur Ikonographie: Die Gestalt des Narren konkretisiert sich im Bild und erhält auf diese Weise eine Anschaulichkeit, die zu seiner Publikumswirksamkeit entschieden beigetragen hat.
