Cottonwood and the River of Time looks at some of the approaches scientists have used to unravel the puzzles of the natural world. With a lifetime of work in forestry and genetics to guide him, Reinhard Stettler celebrates both what has been learned and what still remains a mystery as he examines not only cottonwoods but also trees more generally, their evolution, and their relationship to society. Cottonwoods flourish on the verge, near streams and rivers. Their life cycle is closely attuned to the river's natural dynamics. An ever-changing floodplain keeps generating new opportunities for these pioneers to settle and prepare the ground for new species. Perpetual change is the story of cottonwoods -- but in a broader sense, the story of all trees and all kinds of life. Through the long parade of generation after generation, as rivers meander and glaciers advance and retreat, trees have adapted and persisted, some for thousands of years. How do they do this? And more urgently, what lessons can we learn from the study of trees to preserve and manage our forests for an uncertain future? In his search for answers, Stettler moves from the floodplain of a West Cascade river, where seedlings compete for a foothold, to mountain slopes, where aspens reveal their genetic differences in colorful displays; from the workshops of Renaissance artists who painted their masterpieces on poplar to labs where geneticists have recently succeeded in sequencing a cottonwood's genome; from the intensively cultivated tree plantations along the Columbia to old-growth forests challenged by global warming. Natural selection and adaptation, the comparable advantages and disadvantages of sexual versus asexual reproduction, the history of plant domestication, and the purposes, risks, and potential benefits of genetic engineering are a few of the many chapters in this story. By offering lessons in how nature works, as well as how science can help us understand it, Cottonwood and the River of Time illuminates connections between the physical, biological, and social worlds.

Lewis' debut novel, Cottonwood Flowing, is the coming of age story of Eva Kelly, who at the tender age of 17 watched with anguish as her brothers were sent to fight in World War II. Back home in New Ulm, Minn., Eva found herself living not far from the camp where some 200 enemy prisoners of war were being held, and one of them had been sent to work on her family farm. Some 60 years later, Eva's granddaughter, Claire Beaudine, learns of forbidden love through a series of letters found in an old trunk. At the same time, Claire finds herself caught up in a dangerous affair of her own. Interwoven between Eva's journals and Claire's memories are the stories of young men sent off to war, the loved ones they left behind, and the secrets that have been locked away for six decades. When Eva is hospitalized, Detective Chris Bruening finds himself investigating the case, and the people in her life, including Eva's beautiful and haunted niece, Lyneah Hamilton. Does Lyneah's involvement with a drifter, Hank Beaudine make her an accomplice? As he gets closer to the truth, past and present collide, and the Cottonwood River gives up her secrets.

is a story about a duck cabin on Alaska's Copper River Delta—and much more! In 1959 the Shellhorns built their place on Pete Dahl Slough, one of many intertidal waterways that braid the 50 mile marshland formed by the Copper. This wetland is a natural breeding habitat for waterfowl, and also a stopping place for migratory birds. Time and Tide Adventures on Alaska's Copper River Delta While early explorers and prospectors traversed the region, it was salmon that first drew pioneers to the outer edges of the Delta, where fishermen built camps to operate set net sites. Soon the famous Copper River and Northwestern Railroad would follow. Here is a chronicle of the early days of the Delta, beginning with Lt. Henry Allen's amazing expedition up the Copper in 1885, as well as a history of fisheries, war, roads, fires, storms, earthquakes, floods, and duck hunting. Plus change of habitat, with moose, bear, and other predators moving out on the Delta as brush and trees exploded following land uplift, and the sloughs gradually silted in. Meet characters such as Long Shorty, Curly Hoover, Kernel Korn, Eyeball Leer, and the Mayor of Pete Dahl, Don Shellhorn. Learn about duck shacks such as the Pair-A-Dice Inn, Boxcar, and Korn Hole, and the rich history hidden in their walls. Delight in the foibles of boating and hunting in the wild weather and water of the Flats. Revel in the Ode to Family and small town Alaska found in countless quotes from the Shellhorn Duck Cabin Logs, 54 years of unique recorded history, written by 458 different visitors. Full of laughter, joy, and tragedy; replete with lessons and truths; ribald and poignant; Time and Tide is the story of an Era of Adventure on the Copper River Delta.

Cottonwood An Observation written by J. P. Lucas and has been published by Trafford Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-26 with Fiction categories.

Cottonwood, an Observation is based on the lifetime of a cottonwood tree and the things seen by him over an eighty-five-year period from 1842 until the end of WWI. He watches the development of the country around him, from pristine prairie, the time of the Buffalo and the Indian, through the settlement and development of a city nearly under his branches. Cottonwood becomes intimately involved in the lives of the main characters of the book from what he sees and hears from his point of observation above the Sweetwater River, in the developing state of Wyoming. He observes the wars of the era, the medical developments of those years, the passing of the Indian, the coming and the passing of the Pony Express. He watches as the telegraph, telephone, and the railroad come into his part of the world. He becomes intimately involved in the stories of those passing his post. He inspires introspection into our personal lives by his constant attempt to analyze the actions of human beings, their sometimes peaceful and sometimes deadly interactions with one another. He records the stories of the lives of those fleeing the confusion and discord of Europe as they search for opportunity in the New World. We watch, through the eyes of Cottonwood, as a woman in Appalachia struggles, with an iron will, to break the bonds and stereotyping of ignorant mountain women. Cottonwood observes as the love of two men bring salvation to an incorrigible Indian warrior. He watches as love heals the broken lives of two WWI survivors and catalogs those things he has seen, felt, and questioned. The fact that freedom, dreams, love, and courage overcome every obstacle is the true conclusion of Cottonwoods narrative. Cottonwood, the observer, makes us take a critical look at ourselves, our actions, our motives, and why we are here. Cottonwood, the book, makes us look at our nation and why this unique place called America and its God-given freedoms are here. He leaves us with the fervent hope that we will continue to deserve and appreciate those blessings and benefits that only Americans enjoy.

And so poet and naturalist Kathleen Cain fell in love with the cottonwood tree. Regarded by many as a nuisance, a "trash tree," the cottonwood not only has a fascinating history, it has served noble purposes as well. Ranging from Vermont to Arizona to Alaska, this native North American tree, in various sizes, shapes, and subspecies, has been a sacred symbol, a shelter providing relief from both heat and cold, a signpost for the lost and weary-and underneath its branches many dreams have been born. In a magical blend of art and science, the author looks not only at the cottonwood-how it grows, how it travels, and what it says-but at the roles it has played and continues to play in the art, health, and history of North America. If you need the science, you will find it here-if you need the human heart, you will find it here as well. "Champion" means winner, defender, something outstanding-a hero. After reading The Cottonwood Tree: An American Champion you will see why this remarkable tree stands so tall in the American landscape. Book jacket.
