Seventh-day Adventist editors from all parts of the world met in Washington, D.C., in August, 1939, to participate in a general editorial council, the first to be held. As a source of inspiration and guidance to this group, the leaders of the denomination arranged to have placed in their hands the E.G. White instruction which had been directed to our writers and editors through the years, drawn from both published sources and manuscripts, in the form of a little paper-bound work entitled Counsels to Editors. Five hundred copies of this little work were printed, and the stock was soon exhausted. Earthquakes rip through the world as the Creator approaches, the stars fall, the sun goes dark, and the moon proclaims death. Jesus comes and His powerful presence causes the atmosphere to split and roll away. Revelation 6 shows people wailing for the mountains to bury them: “Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of His wrath is come; and who will be able to stand?” And who does stand in that day? No one. Not a single soul. It's the total annihilation of a vile, self-righteous human race. God's followers expected all of this to happen on October 22, 1844. They watched and waited, but Jesus didn't return. This was only a warning preview of His return in the sixth seal. In God's mercy, He commands to delay the cataclysm of judgment day so that He can send to the world the needed preparation for the day of wrath. That needed preparation comes with the seven trumpets of the seventh seal that occur after 1844. The postponed destruction seen in the sixth seal will yet be a future reality. Trumpets were extremely important in the lives of the people of ancient Israel. Through the use of trumpets God spoke to them, guided them, warned them, and directed them. It was the duty of the priests to sound the trumpets at the appropriate times. But sometimes God Himself spoke to them directly, such as at Mt. Sinai, when in awful and terrifying grandeur the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder as the mighty God of heaven descended in fire, and the mountain trembled violently. This spectacular demonstration was to prepare the hearts of the people to receive with reverence and awe the pronouncement of His holy ten commandment law (Ex. 19:16 – 20:21). In fact, trumpets were often connected with the law and the ark of the covenant, which contained it. Priests blowing trumpets were to precede and accompany the ark whenever it was transported. An example of this is found in Joshua 6:1-20, where 7 priests blowing 7 trumpets marched before the ark around the city of Jericho for 7 days, and on the seventh day they blew the trumpets 7 times, and as the people shouted, the walls of the city collapsed. Is the God of heaven any less zealous for His sacred law today than He was in ancient times? Could it be that even now in our day He is allowing trumpets to blow to warn of the impending collapse of the cities of the nations, which are so filled with crime and corruption? Will He not rise from His throne and oversee the final dispensation of justice upon a world, which is careening toward self-destruction? My book's objective is to describe the beliefs, practices, and ventures of the Adventist church that have had or still have a significant impact on my life.
