This book offers a detailed examination of the counter-insurgency operations undertaken by the Nigerian military against Boko Haram between 2011 and 2017. Based on extensive fieldwork conducted with military units in Nigeria, Counter-Insurgency in Nigeria has two main aims. First, it seeks to provide an understanding of the Nigerian military’s internal role – a role that today, as a result of internal threats, pivots towards counter-insurgency. The book illustrates how organizational culture, historical experience, institutions, and doctrine, are critical to understanding the Nigerian military and its attitudes and actions against the threat of civil disobedience, today and in the past. The second aim of the book is to examine the Nigerian military campaign against Boko Haram insurgents – specifically, plans and operations between June 2011 and April 2017. Within this second theme, emphasis is placed on the idea of battlefield innovation and the reorganization within the Nigerian military since 2013, as the Nigerian Army and Air Force recalibrated themselves for COIN warfare. A certain mystique has surrounded the technicalities of COIN operations by the Army against Boko Haram, and this book aims to disperse that veil of secrecy. Furthermore, the work’s analysis of the air force’s role in counter-insurgency is unprecedented within the literature on military warfare in Nigeria. This book will be of great interest to students of military studies, counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, African politics and security studies in general.

It is a reserch work that is aimed at providing solution to the problem on insurgency in Nigera and the entire lake chad basin, looking at the option of returning the water into the lake chad thereby resoring the lost ecosystem and recreating a means of livelihood for the population of the basin. The loss of over 90 percent of the lake has contributed largely In fuelling insurgency within the lake chad basin. It is believed that this would deprive the warlords of militants to continue with there insurgent and subversive actions. The history of insurgency in Nigeria was recounted and the efforts of the Nigerian government in counterinsurgency was critically reviewed.

Since the 1960s, Nigeria has experienced one form of insurgency or the other with dire consequences for national security, to the extent that the country is said to suffer from multipolar insurgencies one from the Atlantic and the other from the Lake Chad axis. The book titled "Collaborative Strategies for Counter Insurgency in Nigeria" was inspired by the need to effectively counter terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria through collaborative measures by all stakeholders. It makes a strong and penetrating case for collaborative counterinsurgency in Nigeria. In addition, the book differentiated the terms collaboration, coordination and cooperation underlining the point that though these terms are often used interchangeably, but there are subtle differences among them. It argues forcefully that successful COIN is possible through harnessing the hard, soft, and smart powers available to the military and the nation in general. The book provides some strategies to enhance interagency collaboration in COIN operations in Nigeria. The motivation for writing this book comes from the desire to orchestrate greater synergy and collaboration among various security forces tasked to defeat insurgency in Nigeria. The author's quest towards contributing to intellectual discourse on COIN also informed his decision to put pen to paper to birth this book. The book took a prolonged period of research and consultations with relevant stakeholders. It is based on extensive review of both published and unpublished literature about counterinsurgency. I commend the book to diverse segments of readers such as military personnel, students of terrorism and insurgency, academics, and general readers because it provides a fresh and incisive perspective on approaches to improve interagency collaboration in COIN operations. The thoughts espoused in this book by the author will remain valid for all men of warfare as a reference material.

"Boko Haram is the major threat to the Nigerian state, and has emerged as a destabilizing factor across sub-Saharan Africa. This is now a major focus of global policy-making as between 2013 and 2014 insurgency-related deaths in Nigeria exceeded those in Iraq and Afghanistan. While much has been written about Boko Haram's ideology and Islamism, very little has been written on the actual military nature of the organisation. This book is the first to focus on the military nature of Boko Haram, the reasons for its success in those specific regions of the Chad basin it operates in and a detailed history of the Nigerian army's counter-insurgency - with whom, uniquely, the author has spent research time. The book identifies and analyses the battles and skirmishes on the front line as well as exploring a wider explanation for Boko Haram's military success and the causes of the instability in the region."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

This book provides a contemporary overview of Boko Haram's activities. Since Boko Haram emerged in 2002, media-driven narratives as well as social scientific methodologies have been increasingly applied to draw generalisable conclusions on what goals the groups have pursued, what strategies it has used for these purposes and the counter campaign strategies authorities have pursued. But from 2009 to 2018, Boko Haram has pursued high-intensity violence: assassinations, bombing, kidnappings, beheading or threats of violence, conscriptions and territorial occupation. This makes it imperative to deepen and broaden our understanding of the groups’ activities toward a problem-solving and policy-relevant analysis. Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 70.0, Obafemi Awolowo University, course: International Relations, language: English, abstract: This study unravels the impact of Boko Haram insurgency on Nigeria’s relations with its Neighbours. This study analyses the nature and character of Nigeria’s neighbours and discovers that it is most time responsible for a low profile in Nigeria’s foreign policy gesture towards them. This phenomenon is not unconnected to their perception of Nigeria as a hegemonic power in its neighbourhood given Nigeria demographic, economic and military preponderance over them. This perception of Nigeria by its neighbours has over the years contributed to their frosty relations notably; the hostile gestures of Chad and Cameroon towards Nigeria, the security concern that the internal crisis in Chad in the 1970s generated for Nigeria coupled with the presence of French forces in N’Djamena at the eve of the Nigerian Civil War. The study draws the attention to how Boko Haram insurgency further influences Nigeria’s relations with its neighbours. The outreach of Boko Haram insurgency beyond the boundary of Nigeria to include that of Nigeria’s neighbours has worsened the existing frosty relations among them. This is true if one considers the fact that the activities of the Boko Haram have gone beyond the north-eastern part of Nigeria, with its violent attacks on the Nigerien soil compounding the already existing economic crisis in Niger Republic, kidnapping of prominent citizens of Cameroon and foreign nationals for ransom motive, its use of Chad as a safe haven and notably, its thwarting of Nigeria’s influence in its neighbourhood, Boko Haram insurgency has forced Nigeria to concentrate more on its domestic issue. The study therefore, concludes by recommending to the government to adopt policies that are expansive and inclusive to address the crisis among which is the revamping of the socioeconomic condition and that attention should be given to border management and administration.
