Countering Culture equips Christians to take a reasoned stand for biblical principles in the classroom as well as in the boardroom. The follow up to the popular youth study "Thinking Like a Christian", and the second in the Worldviews in Focus series, "Countering Culture introduces learners to the worldviews and ideas that are shaping our culture while providing understanding as to why our society is moving in the direction it is headed. Focusing on the ideas of secular humanism, neo-Marxism, and the new age, participants in this twelve-week study will discover how biblical Christianity shines bright as the only solution to the troubling trends seen in our culture. This study will not only prepare your student for the college and university campus, but will work to present a biblical worldview for everyday living. The Teaching Textbook contains a CD that houses all of the materials needed for each lesson while offering four different teaching tracks: homeschool, youth group or classroom, college, and adult studies. Busy teachers will love the scripted lessons, activity sheets, lesson helps, and more.

This is the first full-length study in any language of the writings of a remarkable figure in French literary and cultural history, author of nine prose fiction works between 1958 and 1988. Despite establishment recognition and a popular mass-market following, Christiane Rochefort has hitherto received surprisingly little critical attention. Her fiction forms an easily approachable learning tool for all students of post-war French politics and culture; the bestseller, Les Petits Enfants du siècle, is a set text in schools and universities in the UK and USA. This novel of growing up in the working class high-rises of Paris, written in the language of the streets, provides a vivid, child-centred view of a young's girl's social, political and sexual awakening. The Novels of Christiane Rochefort looks at each novel in turn and applies close attention to the narrative sophistication and political subversion of the books. Certain contemporary themes run through her work: the status of children, language as instrument of oppression and subversion, homosexuality, incest, child abuse. Each chapter of this book provides in-depth cultural and socio-political background material, and delivers a study that will be of great interest and value to students across a wide range of literary and cultural disciplines.

Revised and updated, with a new chapter on the refugee crisis. Welcome to the front lines. Everywhere we turn, battle lines are being drawn—traditional marriage vs. gay marriage, pro-life vs. pro-choice, personal freedom vs. governmental protection. Seemingly overnight, culture has shifted to the point where right and wrong are no longer measured by universal truth but by popular opinion. And as difficult conversations about homosexuality, abortion, and religious liberty continue to inject themselves into our workplaces, our churches, our schools, and our homes, Christians everywhere are asking the same question: How are we supposed to respond to all this? In Counter Culture, New York Times bestselling author David Platt shows Christians how to actively take a stand on such issues as poverty, sex trafficking, marriage, abortion, racism, and religious liberty—and challenges us to become passionate, unwavering voices for Christ. Drawing on compelling personal accounts from around the world, Platt presents an unapologetic yet winsome call for Christians to faithfully follow Christ into the cultural battlefield in ways that will prove both costly and rewarding. The lines have been drawn. The moment has come for Christians to rise up and deliver a gospel message that’s more radical than even the most controversial issues of our day.

This book discusses three major elements - MTV, the Music of Malaysia, and the Music of Indonesia - and how these three interact in the modern cultural setting. The research objective behind the book was to study the impact of globalization, in the form of the MTV onslaught on the youth musical culture and identities of Indonesia and Malaysia, and to determine what theoretical basis could explain the new cultural products which have risen in response to this process. The book goes on to examine whether the nasyid and irama Malaysia music genres in Malaysia and dangdut in Indonesia are part of this process and how it is achieved.

Rebelling against bourgeois vacuity and taking their countercultural critique on the road, the Beat writers and artists have long symbolized a spirit of freedom and radical democracy. Manuel Martinez offers an eye-opening challenge to this characterization of the Beats, juxtaposing them against Chicano nationalists like Raul Salinas, Jose Montoya, Luis Valdez, and Oscar Acosta and Mexican migrant writers in the United States, like Tomas Rivera and Ernesto Galarza. In an innovative rereading of American radical politics and culture of the 1950s and 1960s, Martinez uncovers reactionary, neoromantic, and sometimes racist strains in the Beats’ vision of freedom, and he brings to the fore the complex stances of Latinos on participant democracy and progressive culture. He analyzes the ways that Beats, Chicanos, and migrant writers conceived of and articulated social and political perspectives. He contends that both the Beats’ extreme individualism and the Chicano nationalists’ narrow vision of citizenship are betrayals of the democratic ideal, but that the migrant writers presented a distinctly radical and inclusive vision of democracy that was truly countercultural.

This project introduces the concept of intercultural training (ICT) and emphasises the importance of such programmes for the successful integration of those sojourning overseas. "Countering Culture Shock in a Globalised World", was specifically tailor-made for a small group of Egyptians who resided in England for three months in the summer of 2008. Its main objective was to arm them with skills enabling them to have a better understanding of the English culture and thus effectively integrate. This project also discusses the adverse effects highly evident in sojourners who do not undergo ICT programmes before they sojourn abroad, namely culture shock, ethnocentrism and stereotyping. As well as focusing on the training materials used for the programme, it looks at the distinctive cultural characteristics that make up Egyptians and marks these traits against theoretical cultural frameworks conceptualised by three pioneers in the intercultural field. It compares these traits to those of England's, an imperative comparison to make in order to design an appropriate agenda. Finally, it evaluates the training materials used and discusses the successes and obstacles encountered along the way. It is hoped that this project may serve as a good basis for which future ICT designs for similar clients can be built upon, adapted and developed.

One of the most pressing challenges in the fight against terror is the way in which terrorist organizations have developed uniquely effective recruitment tools. Terrorist groups such as ISIS have successfully indoctrinated followers from all over the world, expanding their reach far beyond the Middle East. It is imperative that the international community finds effective ways to respond to this threat. This book presents findings and recommendations from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) ‘Human Factors in the Defense Against Terrorism: the Case of Jordan’, held in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in November 2016. The aim of the workshop was to deepen NATO-Jordanian cooperation within the Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) framework by sharing best practices in counter-terrorism and de-radicalization strategies among government authorities and distinguished experts from the diplomatic, military, academic, and private sectors. The discussions were centered around the technological and psychological aspects of terrorist recruitment techniques, particularly with regard to social media and other information-sharing platforms. Participants developed several innovative strategies for preventing, and even reversing, radicalization, and also established a series of protocols and emergency response techniques for practitioners and policy makers in the fields of counter-terrorism and emergency responders. Providing an overview of current expertise and best practice, this book will be of interest to all those collaborating to effectively counter the threats of terrorism and fight the process of radicalization.
