Excerpt from County Folklore, Vol. 3 The material for the following pages was brought together some years ago by Mr. G. F. Black, and would have been passed through the press by him but for his absence from England. Mr. Black having gone to reside in the United States since he placed his collections in the hands of the Council for publication, the Society is indebted to Mr. N. W. Thomas for undertaking the duty of editing the MSS., as well as for some additional matter, and for the care he has bestowed on the whole work. The Council desire to express their thanks to the compilers of the volume, to Mr. Gilbert Goudie, Mr. A. K. Williamson, and the Rev. Thomas Mathewson, for notes communicated to Mr. Black, and to those owners of copyright works who have permitted extracts therefrom to appear in the ensuing pages. It may perhaps be well to remind members of the scope and object of the series of County Folklore volumes; namely, to bring together in an accessible form the scattered notices of local folklore which occur in local records, old topographies, travellers' diaries, miscellaneous periodicals, and other such out-of-the-way sources. It is designed to form a record of the past, not a description of the present. Hence information from oral or modern sources is only exceptionally used or quoted in its pages. Excerpt from County Folklore, Vol. 2 It was much easier to collect such treasure in my, bucket, than it was to sort it afterwards, according to the prescription of the scientific. I have, in the main, worked on the plan set forth by Mr. Gomme in his Handbook of Folklore. In doubtful matters, I have occa sionally used my own common sense, and, occasionally been glad to seek counsel of Mr. E. Sidney Hartland, whom I have had to thank, and still do thank, for much kindness and consideration. The many cross-references given will, it is to be hoped, prevent any great irritation or distress being felt by those who have to consult my pages, and who fail to find the object of their quest under what they may deem to be its proper heading. The printing of local names in Clarendon will also aid the hunter. In its own good time, our Society may further soothe, by producmg the much-to-be-wished-for index to the County F olk-lore Series. It will be seen that I have acted on a most liberal interpretation of the term, folk-lore; indeed I have more than once made spoil of what is interesting as mere survival, or as the debris of exploded institutions. The ringing of the curfew, for example, has perhaps -no more to do with folk-lore than has the tinkling of a muffin-bell, yet, in imitation of fellow-labourers, I, have registered a few instances of its continuance, and might have noted all met with in my reading, had I steadily regarded my work, year in, year out, from the same point of view a thing impossible.
