The last century has been characterized by the development of information theory and the consequent transformative impact of new technologies on societies around the world. It seems likely that the tremendous progress in nanoscience – the ability to manipulate microscopic systems at the level of a single atom – and the emergence of quantum information science, will be the key components of the next revolution; that of the new quantum technologies. Indeed, the ability to manipulate and control quantum systems has already found a variety of potential applications, ranging from the development of molecular nanoscale machines which exploit quantum coherence for their functioning, to metrological schemes where quantum effects are used to enhance the accuracy of measurement and detection systems to achieve higher statistical precision than is possible using purely classical approaches. This book presents the proceedings of the Enrico Fermi Summer School on Quantum Simulators (Course 198) held in Varenna, Italy, 22-27 July 2016. Topics covered included: cold atoms in optical lattices; trapped ions; solid state implementations; quantum many-body physics; quantum photonics; hybrid quantum systems; and transport phenomena. The book will be of interest to all those whose work is connected to the rapidly growing field of quantum technologies.

This thesis explores ultracold quantum gases of bosonic and fermionic atoms in optical lattices. The highly controllable experimental setting discussed in this work, has opened the door to new insights into static and dynamical properties of ultracold quantum matter. One of the highlights reported here is the development and application of a novel time-resolved spectroscopy technique for quantum many-body systems. By following the dynamical evolution of a many-body system after a quantum quench, the author shows how the important energy scales of the underlying Hamiltonian can be measured with high precision. This achievement, its application, and many other exciting results make this thesis of interest to a broad audience ranging from quantum optics to condensed matter physics. A lucid style of writing accompanied by a series of excellent figures make the work accessible to readers outside the rapidly growing research field of ultracold atoms.

This book derives from the content of graduate courses on cold atomic gases, taught at the Renmin University of China and at the University of Science and Technology of China. It provides a brief review on the history and current research frontiers in the field of ultracold atomic gases, as well as basic theoretical description of few- and many-body physics in the system. Starting from the basics such as atomic structure, atom-light interaction, laser cooling and trapping, the book then moves on to focus on the treatment of ultracold Fermi gases, before turning to topics in quantum simulation using cold atoms in optical lattices. The book would be ideal not only for professionals and researchers, but also for familiarizing junior graduate students with the subject and aiding them in their preparation for future study and research in the field.

This book presents written versions of the eight lectures given during the AMS Short Course held at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Washington, D.C. The objective of this course was to share with the scientific community the many exciting mathematical challenges arising from the new field of quantum computation and quantum information science. The course was geared toward demonstrating the great breadth and depth of this mathematically rich research field. Interrelationships withexisting mathematical research areas were emphasized as much as possible. Moreover, the course was designed so that participants with little background in quantum mechanics would, upon completion, be prepared to begin reading the research literature on quantum computation and quantum informationscience. Based on audience feedback and questions, the written versions of the lectures have been greatly expanded, and supplementary material has been added. The book features an overview of relevant parts of quantum mechanics with an introduction to quantum computation, including many potential quantum mechanical computing devices; introduction to quantum algorithms and quantum complexity theory; in-depth discussion on quantum error correcting codes and quantum cryptography; and finally, exploration into diverse connections between quantum computation and various areas of mathematics and physics.

This volume in the series brings together reknowned experts in the field to present the reader with an account of the latest developments in quantum mechanics, molecular dynamics, and the teaching of computational chemistry. There are so many developments in the field of computational chemistry that it is difficult to keep track of them. The series was established to review the high volume of developments in the field. Rather than create a traditional article, each author approaches a topic to enable the reader to understand and solve problems and locate key references quickly. Each article has tutorial value. An updated compendium of software for molecular modeling appears as an appendix as in previous volumes. To the editors' knowledge, this is the most complete listing of sources of software for computational chemistry anywhere.

Introduction To Topological Quantum Matter Quantum Computation written by Tudor D. Stanescu and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-07-02 with Science categories.

What is "topological" about topological quantum states? How many types of topological quantum phases are there? What is a zero-energy Majorana mode, how can it be realized in a solid-state system, and how can it be used as a platform for topological quantum computation? What is quantum computation and what makes it different from classical computation? Addressing these and other related questions, Introduction to Topological Quantum Matter & Quantum Computation provides an introduction to and a synthesis of a fascinating and rapidly expanding research field emerging at the crossroads of condensed matter physics, mathematics, and computer science. Providing the big picture and emphasizing two major new paradigms in condensed matter physics – quantum topology and quantum information – this book is ideal for graduate students and researchers entering this field, as it allows for the fruitful transfer of ideas amongst different areas, and includes many specific examples to help the reader understand abstract and sometimes challenging concepts. It explores the topological quantum world beyond the well-known topological insulators and superconductors and unveils the deep connections with quantum computation. It addresses key principles behind the classification of topological quantum phases and relevant mathematical concepts and discusses models of interacting and noninteracting topological systems, such as the toric code and the p-wave superconductor. The book also covers the basic properties of anyons, and aspects concerning the realization of topological states in solid state structures and cold atom systems. Topological quantum computation is also presented using a broad perspective, which includes elements of classical and quantum information theory, basic concepts in the theory of computation, such as computational models and computational complexity, examples of quantum algorithms, and key ideas underlying quantum computation with anyons. This new edition has been updated throughout, with exciting new discussions on crystalline topological phases, including higher-order topological insulators; gapless topological phases, including Weyl semimetals; periodically-driven topological insulators; and a discussion of axion electrodynamics in topological materials. Key Features: · Provides an accessible introduction to this exciting, cross-disciplinary area of research. · Fully updated throughout with new content on the latest result from the field. · Authored by an authority on the subject. Tudor Stanescu is a professor of Condensed Matter Theory at West Virginia University, USA. He received a B.S. in Physics from the University of Bucharest, Romania, in 1994 and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in 2002. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Rutgers University and at the University of Maryland from 2003 to 2009. He joined the Department of Physics and Astronomy at West Virginia University in Fall 2009. Prof. Stanescu’s research interests encompass a variety of topics in theoretical condensed matter physics including topological insulators and superconductors, topological quantum computation, ultra-cold atom systems in optical lattices, and strongly correlated materials, such as, for example, cuprate high-temperature superconductors. His research uses a combination of analytical and numerical tools and focuses on understanding the emergence of exotic states of matter in solid state and cold atom structures, for example, topological superconducting phases that host Majorana zero modes, and on investigating the possibilities of exploiting these states as physical platforms for quantum computation.
