Student evaluations are used by U.S. universities in virtually all disciplines, with these evaluations often being the most important and sometimes the sole measure of an instructor's teaching ability. In fact, departments of economics have relied almost exclusively on in-class, end-of-term evaluations as the measure of instructional product (Becker & Watts, 1999). The administration of classroom evaluation forms and the subsequent data entry tasks are, however, time-consuming and labor-intensive. An increasing number of academic institutions are considering changing to web-based systems in order to take advantage of the greater efficiencies in this mode of delivery. In considering such a change departments will need to determine whether it will impact mean evaluation scores (particularly for faculty in the midst of the tenure process), response rates (impacting reliability of the data), and result in possible response rate bias. This study was undertaken in an economics-based public policy program at a large research university in the northeastern U.S. The department was considering changing over to electronic course evaluations but was cautious about the impact it might have on the quality of resulting course evaluation data. Study results find that web-based evaluation methods lead to lower response rates, but that lower response rates do not appear to affect mean evaluation scores. They suggest that faculty evaluation scores will not be adversely affected by switching from paper-and-pencil to web-based evaluations.

This dissertation explored the relationship between student, course, and instructor-level variables and student course ratings. The selection of predictor variables was based on a thorough review of the extensive body of existing literature on student course evaluations, spanning from the 1920' s to the present day. The sample of student course ratings examined in this study came from the entirety of student course evaluations collected during the fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters at the College of Education and Human Development at a large metropolitan university in the southern United States. The student course evaluation instrument is composed of 19 statements concerning the instructor's teaching ability, preparation, grading, the course text and organization to which the student rates their agreement with the statement on a 5 point Likert-type scale ranging from 1 "Strongly Disagree", "Poor", or "Very Low" to 5 "Strongly Agree", "Excellent" or "Very High". In order to assess the relationship between the student, course, and instructor-level variables and the student course rating, hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) analyses were conducted. Most of the variability in student course rating was estimated at the student-level and this was reflected in the fact that most of the statistically significant relationships were found at the student-level. Prior student course interest and the amount of student effort were statistically significant predictors of student course rating in all of the regression models. These findings were supported by previous studies and provide further evidence of such relationships. Additional HLM analyses were conducted to assess the relationship between student course rating and final course grade. Results of the HLM analyses indicated that student course rating was a statistically significant predictor of student course grade. This finding is consistent with the existing literature which posits a weak positive relationship between expected course grade and student course rating.

The purpose of this study was to describe the effects of mid-course evaluations on teaching and student learning. A mixed methods approach was used, combining faculty and student surveys, faculty interviews, debriefing sessions, and a comparison of mid-course evaluations scores with end-of-semester scores. Out of 510 section mean scores (128 sections) from faculty members who participated in the study, 352 section mean scores (88 sections, 69%) showed students' perceptions of their own learning improved between the time they completed the mid-course evaluation and the time they completed the end-of-course student rating survey. Results showed when faculty administered a mid-course evaluation, students' perceptions of their own learning improved. Faculty members saw more improvement if they conducted a mid-course evaluation, read the feedback, and discussed this input with their students. Faculty members saw the most improvement in their ratings when they also made changes based upon student feedback. The results of this study should be encouraging to all faculty members and administrators who may feel they want to improve their teaching and increase student learning but have limited time to devote to course revisions.
