Covenant and the People of God gathers twenty-four essays from friends and colleagues of Messianic Jewish theologian and New Testament scholar Mark S. Kinzer, in honor of his seventieth birthday. The essays are organized around two central themes that have animated Kinzer’s work: the nature of the covenant and what it means to be the people of God. The volume includes fascinating discussions of some of the most sensitive areas related to Jewish-Christian dialogue, post-supersessionist interpretation of Scripture, and the theological shape of Messianic Judaism. Among the contributors are scholars working in North America, Europe, and Israel. They include: Gabriele Boccaccini, Douglas A. Campbell, Holly Taylor Coolman, Gavin D’Costa, Jean-Miguel Garrigues, Douglas Harink, Richard Harvey, Vered Hillel, Jonathan Kaplan, Daniel Keating, Amy-Jill Levine, Antoine Lévy, Gerald McDermott, Michael C. Mulder, David M. Neuhaus, Isaac W. Oliver, Ephraim Radner, Jennifer M. Rosner, David J. Rudolph, Thomas Schumacher, Faydra L. Shapiro, R. Kendall Soulen, Lee B. Spitzer, and Etienne Vetö.

This book looks at many of the issues that fill our news bulletins daily concerning the tiny nation of Israel. For centuries, Jews have been subjected to horrendous abuses. In the opening chapters, we examine the root cause of anti-Semitism and debunk replacement theology, one of the most insidious heresies in the church today. Both anti-Semitism and replacement theology are tools the devil uses to undermine Gods love for Israel and faithfulness to the covenant he made with Abraham. One of the most misinterpreted Old Testament prophecies is now being fulfilled before our eyes. Ezekiels vision of a valley of dry dead bones has so often been used to describe a church that is in desperate need of revival. In the remaining chapters, we look at this prophecy in its proper context. The dry bones are coming together, following the birth of the State of Israel in 1947. Jews from all over the world are returning to the land that was promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The dry bones have grown muscle and have transformed a desert into an oasis. Israel has grown into a major international power, as seen by Ezekiel. Finally, God is not yet finished with his people, and in the last chapter, we see what God says is Israels future. It is a glorious future! It will usher in his return and the establishment of his throne in the city of Jerusalem.

The twentieth century witnessed harsh anti-Semitism, vicious pogroms, and the unimaginable Holocaust. Over a third of the world's Jews were killed. Yet, today the largest concentration of Jews resides in Israel--a modern miracle. Theologian and historian Dr. Jim Eckman presents a riveting history of God's covenant people from the initial promises God made to Abraham to the establishment of the modern state of Israel in 1948. Through enslavement in ancient Egypt, the conquest under Joshua, the establishment of the monarchy under David, the brutal exiles under Assyria and Babylon to the tragedies of Diaspora Judaism, the Jewish people have survived. for almost 1,900 years, the Jews were dispersed and despised as "Christ-killers." But, by the late ninteenth century, there was evidence of a change in the world's perception of the Jews. How and why did they begin their historic trek back to their ancient homeland? Eckman identifies ten major historical events that reawakened the West to the necessity of a homeland for the Jewish people. As he weaves history together with the theological portrait of our covenant-making, covenant-keeping God, Eckman provides an indispensable handbook for understanding today's Middle East and the importance of the Jewish people to God's eternal plan for this planet.

A Bible overview tracing the covenant theme through the Bible. Christians are people of the new covenant made by Jesus’ death on the cross. But what exactly is a covenant? And how does Christ’s new covenant fullfil and complete all the other covenants that God made with his people in the Old Testament? This gripping and highly readable book gives us a sweeping overview of the Bible as it charts the different “deals” that God has made with people in Scripture. It shows how the covenants with Abraham, David, Moses and others all foreshadow the new covenant to come in Jesus, and it helps us see with greater clarity the plan of God as it unfolds through the Bible story. With practical application, and careful, generous discussion of some contentious issues in Christian thinking, this book will help believers of every stage get to grips with this central theme of the Bible.

Presents a doctrine of Scripture based on Hebrews in dialogue with Augustine and Calvin What vision of biblical authority arises from Scripture’s own use of Scripture? This question has received surprisingly little attention from theologians seeking to develop a comprehensive doctrine of Scripture. Today When You Hear His Voice by Gregory W. Lee fills this gap by listening carefully to the Epistle to the Hebrews. Lee illuminates the unique way that Hebrews appropriates Old Testament texts as he considers the theological relationship between salvation history and scriptural interpretation. He illustrates these dynamics through extended treatments of Augustine and Calvin, whose contrasting perspectives on the covenants, Israel, and the literal and figural senses provide theological categories for appreciating how Hebrews innovatively presents Scripture as God’s direct address in the contemporary moment.

God's covenant with Israel has been a central theme in understanding the Old Testament from ancient times, but in the last hundred years it has been a particularly prominent issue in critical biblical study. In this book Professor Nicholson argues that, while in some important respects theposition today regarding the covenant is much the same as it was for leading scholars a century ago, in other ways the intervening debate has made it possible to see far more clearly just how crucial the covenant idea was in the development of what is distinctive in the faith of Israel.
