The prevailing consumerism in Chinese cyberspace is a growing element of Chinese culture and an important aspect of this book. Chinese bloggers, who have strongly embraced consumerism and tend to be apathetic about politics, have nonetheless demonstrated political passion over issues such as the Western media's negative coverage of China. In this book, Jiang focuses upon this passion - Chinese bloggers' angry reactions to the Western media's coverage of censorship issues in current China - in order to examine China's current potential for political reform. A central focus of this book, then, is the specific issue of censorship and how to interpret the Chinese characteristics of it as a mechanism currently used to maintain state control. While Cyber-Nationalism in China examines fundamental questions surrounding the political implications of the Internet in China, it avoids simply predicting that the Internet does or does not lead to democratization. Applying a theoretical approach based on the Foucauldian notion of governmentality, the book builds on current scholarship that has attempted to move beyond examining the dynamics of the socio-cultural and -political use of new media technologies. Instead, this book's more intricate theoretical approach does not only accommodate the kind of liberal (apolitical or political) use observed on the Internet in China, but indicates that desires for political change, such as they are, are implicitly embedded in the relationship between China's online communities and state apparatus - noting, however, that the latter claims total governance over the Internet in the name of the people.

The first panel will address censorship and Internet controls within China. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) relies on what is known as the Great Firewall, an assortment of sophisticated electronic censorship and surveillance mechanisms, to monitor online activity within China's borders. It prevents web users within China from accessing foreign ideas, which the Party regards as an ideological threat. It also allows the CCP to maintain effective control over the news by blocking sensitive stories. The second panel will focus on Beijing's efforts to manipulate global coverage of China, including its attempts to increase its own soft power by gaining influence over the American film industry. The Chinese leadership sees American soft power as a major obstacle to China's rise. To counter this aspect of "soft power," the CCP seeks not only to prohibit negative portrayals of China in popular culture but also to curtail positive depictions of the United States while incentivizing Hollywood to portray China positively. Acquisitions by Chinese companies of cornerstone companies in the U.S. film industry have economic and security implications for the United States. We will also hear about the current situation for journalists in China, both foreign and Chinese, who have in recent years been subjected to markedly increased harassment by the Chinese government. The third panel today will address Beijing's views on norms in cyberspace and China's cyber warfare strategy. The Chinese government advocates for a concept known as "Internet sovereignty" in which countries have the right to control their part of cyberspace. And it also asserts that Internet governance should be the purview of national governments and no other actors, which really contrasts with the "multi-stakeholder" model that the United States and certainly others in Europe currently use and is in place. And it would mean that the Internet is no longer a virtual common. The Chinese government has declared that cyberspace and space are now the "new commanding heights in strategic competition." That means war starts there.

This collection of studies (the eighth by David Jacoby) covers a period witnessing intensive geographic mobility across the Mediterranean, illustrated by a growing number of Westerners engaging in pilgrimage, crusade, trading and shipping, or else driven by sheer curiosity. This movement also generated western settlement in the eastern Mediterranean region. A complex encounter of Westerners with eastern Christians and the Muslim world occurred in crusader Acre, the focus of two papers; a major emporium, it was also the scene of fierce rivalry between the Italian maritime powers. The fall of the crusader states in 1291 put an end to western mobility in the Levant and required a restructuring of trade in the region. The next five studies show how economic incentives promoted western settlement in the Byzantine provinces conquered by western forces during the Fourth Crusade and soon after. Venice fulfilled a major function in Latin Constantinople from 1204 to 1261. The city's progressive economic recovery in that period paved the way for its role as transit station furthering western trade and colonization in the Black Sea region. Venice had also a major impact on demographic and economic developments in Euboea, located along the maritime route connecting Italy to Constantinople. On the other hand, military factors drove an army of western mercenaries to establish in central Greece a Catalan state, which survived from 1311 to the 1380s.
