Cow Republic introduces a personal voice which explores the interplays between traditional formalism and contemporary styles and themes. The collection features themes of the African experience, as well as the clash between the modern and traditional worlds, as references to Google and Coca-Cola appear alongside stories involving the violence of slavery or industry against traditional cultures. Some of the poems which most prominently display these features combine form and content in ways that are traditional but at the same time present intriguing avenues for exploration of what it means to come from a place that is at once historic and contemporary, beautiful and ugly. While typically simple on the surface in terms of structures, narratives, and diction, many of the poems are far more complex than they might initially appear. Flexibility with styles and technique do not interfere with the poetic voice, which remains constant throughout. The subtleties of theme and variation in content and style in poems such as "Nigeria for Sale", "Wake Up Africa", and "Who Are They?" should not be mistaken for lack of imagination, but rather viewed as a sensitive and clever manipulation of stanza, diction, and theme to express ideas that are both highly personal and emotional, and also visual and global. Straightforward yet thought-provoking, with a style at the same time minimalist and complex, this collection offers its reader a dynamic experience, shifting between emotions, values, and cultures, all the while maintaining the integrity of the poetic voice and meaning.

"Red Meat Republic: The Rise of the Cattle-Beef Complex, 1865-1906," examines the consolidation of the American meatpacking and ranching industries. Supplying urban consumers with inexpensive beef required a form of industrialized animal husbandry that had high costs, both human and environmental. In spite of these costs - the source of widespread criticism and public unease - this system has persisted in roughly the same shape for nearly a century. I argue this resilience depends on a set of widely accepted narratives that made centralized meatpacking appear natural and inevitable. Whether rooted in cultural discourses justifying Indian land expropriation or technological arguments rationalizing market concentration, particular narratives enabled the historical processes integral to the rise of big meatpacking. "Red Meat Republic" critiques these narratives and offers an alternate account of industrial animal husbandry's origins.

This publication contains the proceedings of a seminar held in Germany (Fed. Rep.) on May 4 -6, 1977, under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities, as part of the EEC programme of co ordination of research on beef production. The programme was drawn up by a combined scientific working group on Genetics and Selection and on Nutrition and Management on behalf of the Beef Production Committee. The working group consisted of Professor Dr. Neimann S~rensen (Denmark, Chairman), Dr. Brolund Larsen (Denmark), Mr. Boccard (France), Dr. H. de Boer (Netherlands), Priv.-Doz. Dr. B. Hoffmann (Germany, Fed. Rep.), Professor Dr. H.J. Langholz (Germany, Fed. Rep.), Dr. J.W.B. King (UK), Mr. R. Jarrige (France), Mr. B. Vissac (France), Professor Dr. A. Romita (Italy), Professor Dr. E.P. Cunningham (Ireland), Mr. P. L'Hermite (CEC) and Dr. J.C. Tayler (Scientific Adviser to CEC). The subject chosen for this seminar was drawn from the list of priorities in research objectives drawn up in 1973 by members of a committee (now the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research, (~PRA). One of the functions of this series of seminars was to summarise and update the information available on the selected subjects and to discuss future needs for research, so as to assist the Commission in evaluating the probable impact of research on agri cultural production within the Community.

Countries in Eastern-Europe are in a lengthy period of rapid changes. Ten Central and Eastern European countries entered the European Union in 2004 and two more entered in 2007. Surrounding countries to the east are in a similar process of change following the disintegration of the former Soviet Union. The transition processes were studied in a recent workshop resulting in this book. It is comprised of 13 contributions: four overview articles, one on the topic of animal welfare and eight country reports. The country reports come from a wide variety of countries in Eastern Europe and Asia: Slovakia, Poland, Baltic States, Russian Federation, Belarus, Ukraine, Caucasian countries and Central Asian countries. The country reports describe the transitions taking place in these countries. Both developments in the beef cattle sector and in the dairy chain are described with emphasis on the dairy chain situation. The authors are from a range of academic and professional backgrounds including universities, research and developmental institutions, farmers’ organisations, agribusiness and a marketing board. Some analyses are made and several critical points in development are signalled. Thus, barriers as well as opportunities for further development are mentioned and described in this book.
