His mother knew him as Buren Ely (1919-2009), but for decades he was the singing cowboy movie and western show star, Monte Hale. He began his movie career just after World War II, and by the 1950's had move to rodeos and circuses as his main public appearances. Monte Hale has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! John Wayne (born Marion Robert Morrison, 1907-1979) stands in a league all by himself when it comes to being an American Cowboy Star. He was an actor, but he came to symbolize the rugged, courageous, and adventurous spirit of the American West. When young "Duke" Morrison came to the studios of Hollywood in the 1920s he was befriended by an old man, someone who lived the legends that John Wayne would later portray, and who would be the template from which John Wayne would pattern his lawmen --- that man was Wyatt Earp. Wayne played many parts that were not westerns, but in the world psyche he will always be the ultimate cowboy. From 1941-1952 Charles Starrett (1903-1986) played THE DURANGO KID, popular character in over 60 films during the heyday of the Cowboy Star. Paired with a variety of sidekicks and horses, the black-masked hero made the Wild West a safer place. From 1949-1956 THE DURANGO KID hit the comic newsstands, too, and now you can once again (or, for the first time) enjoy these terrific adventures! The comic reprints from Calumet History and Hobby are reproduced from actual classic comics, and sometimes reflect the imperfection of books that are decades old. These books are constantly updated with the best version available - if you are EVER unhappy with the experience or quality of a book, return the book to us to exchange for another title or the upgrade as new files become available.

He was Alfred "Lash" LaRue (1917-1996), star of dozens of films, TV appearances, and over 100 issues of a comic title that sold over a million copies from 1949-1961. Lash Larue was different from other cowboy stars, because he was more likely to bring the bad guy down with his bullwhip than with a gun, in theaters LaRue showed young audiences live demonstrations of his skills (he was even the man who taught Harrison Ford how to use the whip as Indiana Jones), and he was promoted to a starring role after starting off as a sidekick! He was George Francis "Gabby" Hayes (1885-1969), one of the most prolific and well-known western actors of the 20th Century. Although he was in his 40s before he made his first film, Gabby Hayes played good guys and bad guys, but was best known as a sidekick to such Western stars as Gene Autry, John Wayne, Roy Rogers, Randolph Scott, and many more - and for a time was one of the wealthiet and most successful actors in Hollywood. The character Hopalong Cassidy was created in 1904 by Clarence E. Mulford, and he became the star of novels, radio, movies, television, his own amusement park, and of course - the comics. In many ways Hopalong was more successful as a character than the other cowboy stars because of the variety of media in which he appeared. Even Louis L'Amour wrote Hopalong novels! The comic reprints from Calumet History and Hobby are reproduced from actual classic comics, and sometimes reflect the imperfection of books that are decades old. GENE AUTRY: the original singing cowboy, was a star of radio, movies, TV, and beginning on his return from military service during World War Two, his own comic book title! Gene was known as a straight-shooter, who could also shoot straight, and thousands of your readers waited eagerly for his bi-monthly adventures. Now you can enjoy these great comics, in print for the first time in two generations! TEX RITTER: He was Woodward Maurice Ritter, but known to almost everyone as Tex. One of the most popular of the singing cowboys, Tex Ritter began singing on radio in the 1920's, added movies to his resume in the 1930's, comics and television in the 1950s. He was the most musically successful of the singing cowboys, and was ultimately inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. His comic book spanned the 1950s, and inspired not only future cowboys but also many country-western singers. BOB COLT: Western Movie cowboys were so popular (and profitable) in the comics that instead of finding another one, Fawcett Comics just made one up! They hired an actor to portray Bob Colt on the cover, and there he was - a western star! The comic reprints from Calumet History and Hobby are reproduced from actual classic comics, and sometimes reflect the imperfection of books that are decades old.
