Chegamos a Manatuto ainda cedo, são 7 e 30 da manhã. O mercado já está em pleno funcionamento, tinha de vir visitá-lo. É um grande e bonito mercado (ou feira), ao longo duma estrada, com muitas vendedoras de produtos agrícolas e uma zona com quinquilharias e roupas. (...) Não há balanças, como em todos os mercados, tudo se vende por prato ou montinho. Acho muito bem. Para quê complicar com balanças se assim funciona perfeitamente? Cada prato ou montinho tem o seu preço, geralmente um dólar, o que facilita as contas e os trocos. Já que estou em Manatuto, não posso deixar de ir a pé até ao mar e ver o centro da povoação. Como nas outras cidades ou vilas timorenses, não existe um núcleo urbano, um “centro” compacto; as casas estão sempre dispersas e há árvores nos quintais e por todo o lado. Mas destaca-se aqui a igreja de Santo António, construída no século XIX, de medidas grandiosas. Lá dentro está a decorrer a missa, entro no vestíbulo mas fico pouco tempo. Do lado de trás da igreja, as ruínas do que terá sido um grande edifício, fronteiro ao mar. Circulo por dentro e vejo que algumas partes de paredes e cantarias ainda estão enegrecidas. Imagino que terá sido incendiado em 1999 pelas milícias, a mando dos indonésios, nos dias a seguir ao referendo que determinou a independência; isso mesmo confirmo depois com um homem com quem me cruzo, colaborador da igreja.

Frederic Durand teaches geography at Toulouse II-Le Mirail University, France. He is the author of Catholicism and Protestantism in the Island of Timor and other works on Southeast Asia, the Malay world, and Indonesia.

In the second edition of this study of religion and kinship in East Timor, David Hicks argues that reproductive rituals and ideas regarding fertility and gender direct the notion that for the Tetum-speaking people of Caraubalo suku, in the district of Viqueque, life and death derive from the same source. This source is the world of the ancestral ghosts (the mate bein). The soul of a person (the klamar mate) who has died becomes transformed by ritual action into an agency for life-affirming fertility, that is, an ancestral ghost, and it is from the ancestors that fertility, which sustains life down the generations, originates. Incorporated into this complex of ideas regarding life, fertility, gender, and death, are two recreational institutions, cockfighting and kick-fighting, which Dr. Hicks argues are ritualized manifestations of fertility and infertility respectively, as well as gendered aspects of the sacred (lulik) and secular (sau) worlds. In addition to contributing to the comparative study of ritual and indigenous notions of reproduction, the second edition of Tetum Ghosts and Kin: Fertility and Gender in East Timor, provides an ethnographic portrait of village life among a people whose traditions were about to be abruptly devastated by war and conquest. In a summary retrospect he outlines the events that overtook the East Timorese between the time of his first period of fieldwork and East Timors becoming a nation on May 20, 2002, and concludes with a brief description of the present condition of Caraubalo.
