Este libro se propone la exploración del modo en que arraigaron y germinaron en la vida literaria española las semillas de los movimientos de vanguardia, desde el manifiesto futurista recogido en la revista Prometeo hasta el umbral de los años treinta, cuando una conjunción de acontecimientos políticos y literarios llevó a la crítica y autocrítica de las normas de vanguardia forjadas en los años anteriores, cerrando un ciclo de perfiles netos. Mediante el examen de las revistas y algunos ensayos (Literaturas europeas de vanguardia, La deshumanización del arte, El nuevo romanticismo) se sitúa el proceso en el espacio social e institucional y se calibran las modalidades de la recepción, los grados de preferencia y rechazo, la evolución de las teorías no sólo desde dentro de los programas y manifiestos (en las revistas del ultraísmo, en La Gaceta literaria), sino también desde círculos tangentes a los ismos (Revista de Occidente) o adversos (Razón y Fe). Resulta un cuadro dinámico, sujeto a debilidades y tutelas, pero muy revelador del clima- moderno- de las convenciones estéticas y poéticas que intervinieron en la conciencia literaria de los escritores, con resultados a veces extraordinarios.

Las energías de la nueva revolución provienen del rechazo del aburrimiento y de la insignificancia en que la inmensa mayoría de la gente se ve obligada a vivir. La "historia crítica" de Mario Perniola, escrita en 1972, restaura la dimensión procesual y colectiva de la aventura situacionista, atendiendo sobre todo a los 12 números de la revista como su obra concreta principal y sin eludir los claroscuros y los problemas de la experiencia.
