Getting into bed with the wrong guy can get you killed Wanting to free herself from her boyfriend, aging gangster “Maddog” Palmieri, Bobbi Ricci concocts a misguided plan with Denny, Maddog’s ex-driver, a guy who’s bent on getting even with the gangster for the humiliating way in which he was sacked. Helping themselves to the gangster’s secret money stash, along with his Cadillac, Bobbi and Denny slip out of town, expecting to lay low for a while before enjoying the spoils. Realizing he’s been betrayed, an enraged Maddog calls in stone-cold killer Lee Trane. As Trane picks up their trail, plans quickly change for Bobbi and Denny, who now find themselves on a wild chase of misadventure through northern British Columbia and into Alaska. Time is running out for them once they find out that Trane’s been sent to do away with them, or worse, bring them back — either way, Maddog will make them pay.

This eye-opening memoir, twenty years in the making, chronicles Luellen Smiley's journey into her father's criminal past, beginning ten years after his death. Luellen is the daughter of the late Allen Smiley-Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel's best friend and business partner for ten years. He was seated next to Bugsy the night he was murdered. Smiley's refusal to turn informant despite an order of deportation, and facing ten years in prison, earned Meyer Lansky's respect. The Mafia defended, financed, and protected Allen for the rest of his life. Luellen discounted her father's Mafia association until she was forty years old. Awakened by an identity meltdown, she cut through her silence and confronted her father's criminal activities. Discoveries derived from government surveillance records, newspaper articles, court testimony, classified FBI documents, interviews and conversations with relatives she begins to write this story. Luellen takes the reader along for the ride on her quest to understand her father's allegiance to the mob while also uncovering her own identity-a quest of humiliation, rage, shame, and acceptance.

Excerpt from The Story of Crime: From the Cradle to the Grave Some years ago I set myself the task of studying crime and prison life in all its phases. Not merely to accept hearsay evidence, but to see and hear with my own eyes and ears all that was significant on the subject that I could. Therefore, where-ever anything was to be learned concerning crime I there prosecuted my inquiries and observed for myself what transpired. I enlisted the sympathies of the Home Office, of judges, magistrates, counsel, solicitors, and a variety of other officials, all of whom rendered me invaluable assistance, and to all of whom I am pleased to be able now to thus acknowledge my deep indebtedness. I have been an industrious attendant at various courts of justice, and witness of many cases, large and small. I have been enabled, from time to time, to view the proceedings from various standpoints - from the bench, the well of the court, the jury-box, but, happily, not from the dock. I have visited many prisons, spending considerable time and thought within and about them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. One would think that at least the youngest humans would be spared from the deeds of the people with twisted minds, but even they are not safe just like that. In this book, learn about the various cases where children were criminally taken away from their parents. It has happened all over the world. A stranger appears at the bedside of a mother who has just given birth and plays upon the trust of the parents to trick them into handing over their child. Perhaps the person is dressed as a doctor, nurse, lab technician, or some other member of the medical staff, but whatever the case may be, their performance as an imposter is sufficient to spin a web of deception convincing enough to spring their trap. Other abductors eschew deception in favor of force or stealth. Some have pulled a gun on the mother and demanded their child; some have simply snatched up the infant when no one was looking. More often than not the perpetrators of these crimes are women, although some claim that their demanding boyfriends or husbands put them up to it. Typically these women are either unable to have children of their own or have great difficulty in doing so. Some of them are depressed over recent miscarriages and wish to replace the baby they lost. Of course, this begs the question of why they don't simply use the proper channels to adopt a child who needs a home, rather than stealing babies that don't belong to them. One answer is that many of them are unable to do so due to a criminal record, history of mental illness, or general instability. Anyone in any of those categories would most likely be denied conventional adoption. But as you will see from the cases in this book, even though the methodology is often similar, the reasons are legion when it comes to what motivates the hand that robs the cradle.
