Magical Habits written by Monica Huerta and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-06-28 with Biography & Autobiography categories.
In Magical Habits Monica Huerta draws on her experiences growing up in her family's Mexican restaurants and her life as a scholar of literature and culture to meditate on how relationships among self, place, race, and storytelling contend with both the afterlives of history and racial capitalism. Whether dwelling on mundane aspects of everyday life, such as the smell of old kitchen grease, or grappling with the thorny, unsatisfying question of authenticity, Huerta stages a dynamic conversation among genres, voices, and archives: personal and critical essays exist alongside a fairy tale; photographs and restaurant menus complement fictional monologues based on her family's history. Developing a new mode of criticism through storytelling, Huerta takes readers through Cook County courtrooms, the Cristero Rebellion (in which her great-grandfather was martyred by the Mexican government), Japanese baths in San Francisco—and a little bit about Chaucer too. Ultimately, Huerta sketches out habits of living while thinking that allow us to consider what it means to live with and try to peer beyond history even as we are caught up in the middle of it. Faith Or Fraud written by Jeremy Patrick and has been published by UBC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-15 with Religion categories.
The growing presence in Western society of non-mainstream faiths and spiritual practices poses a dilemma for the law. For example, if a fortune teller promises to tell the future in exchange for cash, and both parties believe in the process, has a fraud been committed? Building on a thorough history of the legal regulation of fortune-telling laws in four countries, Faith or Fraud examines the impact of people who identify as “spiritual but not religious” on the future legal understanding of religious freedom. Traditional legal notions of religious freedom were conceived in the context of organized religion. Jeremy Patrick examines how the law needs to adapt to a contemporary spirituality in which individuals can select concepts drawn from multiple religions, philosophies, and folklore to develop their own idiosyncratic belief systems. Faith or Fraud exposes the law’s failure to recognize individual spirituality as part of modern religious practice, concluding that legal understanding of freedom of religion has not evolved along with religion itself.

Everyman S Prayer Book written by H. Kenneth MacLennan and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-08 with Religion categories.
The world is replete with conflicts between various governments and various religious factions. Author and retired educator H. Kenneth MacLennan has come to realize that these conflicts will not be resolved until the believers of these religions and governments better understand the true nature of those things in which they believe. Everymans Prayer Book is a humorous, satirical, and a sometimes serious look at the nature of how democratic governments and their courts using many of the same pillars and elements of the legal definition of witchcraft (crafty science, sorcery, and fortune telling) to procure tax payments from believers as Christianity uses in seeking offerings from believers. In considering the nature of democratic governments and their courts, you will find important truths and insights into human nature. Those insights and truths will be revealed through satirizing, ridiculing, lampooning, skewering, deflating, dissecting, embarrassing, undressing, unmasking, and exposing the illusion that the crafty science of democracy represents the people, and that there is such a thing as real justice in the courts of democratic governments. Without faith in the existence and power of God, although the concept of faith is without foundation and the opposite of reason, believers would not accept the power of religions or democratic governments and their courts.
