Excerpt from Cranmer and the Reformation in England The purpose of this volume is not so much to present a biography of Cranmer as to give a sketch of that ecclesiastical period throughout which he remains a consistently prominent figure: a period during which he, more than any other single individual, left his personal impress upon a national institution. It is a peculiarity of the Reformation in England that it is not associated with any one figure of heroic proportions. Germany has her Luther; the Nether lands, William the Silent; Calvin dominated half the Protestant world, and more; Knox, dour and grim as he was, had no little of the heroic quality. In England neither Cranmer nor any other occupies a corresponding position. There is a sense in which the historian may legitimately speak of a person as having created a movement; but he may not say it of Cranmer. He does not absorb the interest while associates fall into the background; we feel that it is the mediocrity of his associates which enables him to absorb so much as he does. Excerpt from Thomas Cranmer: And the English Reformation, 1489-1556 It has been maintained by an eminent scholar re cently dead that the chief content of modern history is the emancipation of conscience from the control of authority. From that point Of view the student of Tudor times will not be exclusive in his choice of heroes. He will find room in his calendar of saints for More as well as for Cranmer. Both had grave imperfections, and both took their share in enforcing the claims of authority over those of conscience. Nor perhaps is it true to say that they died in order that we might be free; but they died for conscience' sake, and unless they and others had died conscience would still be in chains. That was Cranmer's serv ice in the cause of humanity his Church owes him no less, for in the Book of Common Prayer he gave it the most effective of all its possessions. Excerpt from History of the Reformation in England In venturing to lay before the public a volume on the subject of the English Reformation, the author is not unaware of the difficulties connected with it, neither is he so presumptuous as to imagine that any thing new can be presented by him on this deeply interesting portion of Church history. He does not pretend to any originality, or to the possession of any peculiar qualifications for the task he has chosen. All that he claims is this; to have carefully sought exactness and precision in regard to facts and circumstances; to have consulted every writer within his reach in order to verify the statements made in the text; to have endeavored to be strictly just and fair towards all parties and persons; and to have set forth the public acts of the Church and State as faithfully as he was able, and as fully as the limits of the volume would admit.
