Waterways, including the Neuse and Trent Rivers, have shaped the history, industry, and culture of Eastern North Carolina's Craven County. With pre-colonial beginnings as home to Native Americans of different nations, this county became a center for royal government and a genteel destination after Baron Christof de Graffenreid risked his fortune to create the permanent settlement of New Bern. After redefining itself time and time again, Craven County has now emerged as a modern community without losing a drop of its original ambience. The charm of Craven County has been enjoyed not only by North Carolinians, but also by the English during the Revolutionary War, the Union during the Civil War, merchants visiting for trade, and well-to-do hunters who came for the wildlife. Within these pages, readers will discover the landscape that has for centuries surrounded locals and visitors alike with unequaled beauty. This volume uncovers the county as it once was, a contrast between the sophistication of the city once dubbed the "Athens of North Carolina" and the pastoral quality of life in the rural farmlands and hunting clubs. Longtime residents will no doubt recognize scenes in these vintage photographs that show landmarks and views of the waterfront from times past, while those new to the area will delight in seeing their home as it once was.

Excerpt from The Free Negro in North Carolina, And, Some Colonial History of Craven County The most pathetic figure in North Carolina prior to the Civil War was the free negro. Hedged about with social and legal re strictions, he ever remained an anomaly in the social and polit ical life of the State. The origin of this class of people may be attributed to many sources, the most common of which are (1) cohabitation of white women and negro men, (2) intermarriage of blacks and whites, (3) manumission, (4) military service in the Revolution, and (5) immigration from adjoining States. As early as 17232 many free negroes, mulattoes and persons of mixed blood had moved into the Province and had intermarried with the white inhabi tants in contempt of the acts and laws in those cases pro vided. In the year 1715 in order to discourage intermarriage between white women and negro men, a penalty of 50 was imposed upon the' contracting parties, while clergymen and jus tices of peace were forbidden to celebrate such marriage under a like penalty.3 However regrettable it may be, it is certain that there were a few disreputable white women who had illegitimate children by negro men, and such children inherited the legal status of the mother. The laws of 17154 take cognizance of this fact by imposing a penalty on any white woman whether bond or free, who shall have a bastard child by any negro, mulatto or Indian. There is a subtle but significant French heritage in North Carolina. Towns such as Bath, Beaufort, New Bern, and La Grange are testimony to the settlements of French Huguenots in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The city of Fayetteville is named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French ally during the American Revolution. The first European explorers to the North Carolina region were, in fact, French (1524). French Huguenots migrated to the state as early as 1690 and many North Carolinians have last names of French origin. North Carolina has many other place names and remnants of French presence since the early colonial period. This book traces the historical presence of the French in NC from the state's origins to the present and tells the story of a little-known part of the state's cultural heritage.
