This volume includes the proceedings of a NATO sponsored Advanced Research Workshop on the physiology of the Creatine Kinase catalyzed reaction in brain bioenergetics and on the pathophysiology of Neurologic and Psychiatric Diseases. The workshop was held in Tbilisi, Georgia in June 2001. Topics include the Creatine Kinase systems in brain, heart, and muscle; the creatine transporter in brain; and disorders of creatine and ATP metabolism. The present volume will be of particular interest to cell biologists interested in bioenergetics and the physiology of the CK catalyzed reaction in brain and other excitable tissues; neurobiologists interested in the physiology of the CK catalyzed reaction in brain, pediatricians interested in metabolic diseases affecting ATP metabolism and creatine metabolism and transport, and neurologists interested in the effects of creatine in neurodegenerative diseases.

Creatine and Creatine Phosphate: Scientific and Clinical Perspectives is an up-to-date summary of both the scientific and medical aspects of creatine and creatine phosphate metabolism and therapy. It covers in detail the basic biochemistry, bioenergetics and biophysics of these agents with particular emphasis on their role on the cardiovascular and muscle systems. Modern in vivo myocardial and skeletal muscle measurements are outlined, and the importance of the molecules in cardiovascular medicine, sport science and cardiac surgery are highlighted. This book is designed for those interested in the basic scientific background to creatine and creatine phosphate, and also for physicians treating or studying heart and vascular disease. The book will also be vital for sports scientists who wish to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the molecule which is currently being promoted for performance and exercise programmes.

No one has counted the enzymes in the human organism, and probably their profuse number can only be estimated from the restrictions the finite mass of genetic material imposes. Still, nu merous catalytic activities have been identified and investigated for their clinical relevance. After one century of such research, surprisingly, only a handful of enzymes has survived the stern trial of clinical application to find regular medical use. Dis regarding genetic defects, most of the diagnostically used en zymes participate in metabolic conversions fundamental to life: the utilization, transfer or fixation of vital nutrients or of cheJ,llical energy. Creatine kinase is central to the function of the mitochond rion, the cellular power generator. The wider distribution of this enzyme is linked to tissues whose physiology crucially relies on an adaptable supply of energy, notably skeletal muscle, the brain, and the heart. Just as these three tissues vary in their pre ference for different energy sources, each produces a different isoenzyme of creatine kinase. Accordingly, the finding of elevat ed creatine kinase activity in blood can lead to a variety of interpretations, but in practice the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction is the major consideration.

Creatine written by Lorraine Hogan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Medical categories.

Creatine (?-N-methylguanidino acetic acid) is a naturally occurring nitrogenous organic acid synthesized in the kidneys, liver, pancreas and brain (in less quantity), or obtained from a regular diet or as ergogenic nutritional supplement. Creatine is a popular and widely used form of protein supplementation due to its efficacy in improving performance in healthy athletic populations via increased muscle mass and enhanced adenosine triphosphate (ATP) energy regeneration. Chapter One reviews the available findings at animal and cellular studies as well as clinical trials investigating the neuroprotective effect of creatine and the possible mechanisms underlying its effect, which may represent important advances in the management of central nervous system diseases. Chapter Two considers the potential efficacy of creatine as an anabolic and ergonomic therapy for RA patients. In Chapter Three, a low-dimensional antimony-doped tin oxide aggregated nanoparticles (ATO NPs) were synthesized using hydrothermal method in alkaline phase. In Chapter Four, data obtained from -omics technologies and dynamical modeling are executed and analyzed, given the exponential growth of these methodologies in biological scientific research. The relevance of both creatine kinase system and creatine metabolism itself, as part of the molecular system bioenergetics in several components of cell (i.e., cytoskeleton, mitochondria, nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, etc.), deserve to be examined from a systemic view that covers ascending and descending causality.

Biomarkers In Bone Disease written by Victor R. Preedy and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-14 with Medical categories.

In the past decade there has been a major sea change in the way disease is diagnosed and investigated due to the advent of high throughput technologies, such as microarrays, lab on a chip, proteomics, genomics, lipomics, metabolomics etc. These advances have enabled the discovery of new and novel markers of disease relating to autoimmune disorders, cancers, endocrine diseases, genetic disorders, sensory damage, intestinal diseases etc. In many instances these developments have gone hand in hand with the discovery of biomarkers elucidated via traditional or conventional methods, such as histopathology or clinical biochemistry. Together with microprocessor-based data analysis, advanced statistics and bioinformatics these markers have been used to identify individuals with active disease or pathology as well as those who are refractory or have distinguishing pathologies. New analytical methods that have been used to identify markers of disease and is suggested that there may be as many as 40 different platforms. Unfortunately techniques and methods have not been readily transferable to other disease states and sometimes diagnosis still relies on single analytes rather than a cohort of markers. There is thus a demand for a comprehensive and focused evidenced-based text and scientific literature that addresses these issues. Hence the formulation of Biomarkers in Disease. The series covers a wide number of areas including for example, nutrition, cancer, endocrinology, cardiology, addictions, immunology, birth defects, genetics, and so on. The chapters are written by national or international experts and specialists.
