Empowerment of Women for Promoting Health and Quality of Life critically reviews the key theoretical and empirical foundations and policy options for Global Public Health (GPH). The author presents the lessons learned from a meta-analysis of 80 self-organized, successful women's empowerment case studies across the world that have enhanced the health and well-being of their families and communities. The information gleaned offers rare opportunities for understanding what works, how women empower themselves, and how others--professionals included--can help. Additionally, Dr. Kar designs an "EMPOWER" model for empowerment of women for GPH and human development. Using an ecological perspective, the model defines the domains, dimensions, and processes of empowerment, and is applied to a community-based women's empowerment-for-health-promotion initiative. In April 1955, twenty-nine countries from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East came together for a diplomatic conference in Bandung, Indonesia, intending to define the direction of the postcolonial world. Representing approximately two-thirds of the world’s population, the Bandung conference occurred during a key moment of transition in the mid-twentieth century—amid the global wave of decolonization that took place after the Second World War and the nascent establishment of a new cold war world order in its wake. Participants such as Jawaharlal Nehru of India, Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt, Zhou Enlai of China, and Ahmed Sukarno of Indonesia seized this occasion to attempt the creation of a political alternative to the dual threats of Western neocolonialism and the cold war interventionism of the United States and the Soviet Union. Founded in 1978, the goal of the Working Women's Forum is to improve living conditions of working women in India. Its struggle against poverty and insufficient social protection includes programs for women's health and welfare, and credits and cooperatives to enhance the economic participation of women. This organization has developed into a platform for empowerment, giving Indian women both voice and capacity to realize their economic and social goals. The Working Women's Forum has, for over a decade and a half, mobilized the poorest, and the most marginalized sector of the work force in India. Poor women workers face constraints and oppression by their barriers of caste, class, and gender that further marginalize their position both at home and at work place. Caste affiliation restricts their mobility and formulates cultural norms for their social behavior. Class membership limits their access to productive resources and makes them invisible in the economic spheres. The gender roles relegate women to a low productive occupation near the household, minimizing their economic role as only an extension of their domestic chores. In detailing the history and growth of the Working Women's Forum in India, Structuring a Movement and Spreading It On shows how women workers are undermined as workers, defined as housewives, and forced to a status of invisibility, living in subsistence and marginal survival conditions. Their vital contribution to the productive process and thereby the nation's economy is unrecognized. Therefore, the nation's planning process never makes the requisite allocations for the growth and development of this section. It is this segment of the work force that have beenorganized by the Working Women's Forum through credit cooperatives and collective spirit of unionism that has brought about a sea change in the lives of the poorest women. Today, thousands of women have been released from the clutches of perpetual indebtedness and dependency on moneylenders and other middlemen. Women have thus been able to save, create assets, and improve the quality of living, thus ensuring growth with equity.

This book explores Takamure Itsue’s (1894–1964) intellectual odyssey as Japan’s most notable pioneer in the study of women’s history. When she embarked on a series of scholarly projects that investigated marriage patterns and kinship systems in ancient Japan, it was a response to crisis-ridden modernity. Relentless in her quest to dismantle patriarchy, this “woman from the Land of Fire” (a nickname for her birthplace, Kumamoto Prefecture) locked herself away in 1931 and spent the rest of her life conducting research on female-friendly societies with matrilocal arrangements under kinship-based communal systems. While dissecting the patriarchal norms undergirding the capitalist nation-state, she embraced matricultural paradigms that embodied life-sustaining and life-enhancing values through communal childrearing and matrilineal inheritance. Takamure, a visionary thinker, asked big-picture questions and addressed multifarious issues of contemporary relevance, including beauty standards, human trafficking, gross disparities in wealth, war and imperialism, science and religion, and humanity’s relationship with nature.
