Creating Yoknapatawpha is a study of the crucial interplay of reading and writing processes involved in constructing the textual environment of William Faulkner’s work, and the nature and significance of the world created by these many forces. Yoknapatawpha County, the author contends, is the product of these mainly mental processes of construction at all levels, and it is in the similar and even analogous situations that exist between readers and writers of and in the fiction that the dynamic of Faulkner’s work is most keenly discovered. The book discusses novels from throughout Faulkner’s career, and uses elements of Bakhtinian and reader-response theory, among others, to explore its subject, eschewing the limited focus both of strictly formal and more content-oriented approaches, and demonstrating the need for readers and writers to work together, whether harmoniously or otherwise. By examining the fictive nature of Yoknapatawpha, and the requirement for everybody to participate fully in its creation, we can establish useful bases for investigations into the ‘real world’ issues with which Faulkner is so concerned.

In this discerning study of Faulkner's major novels from Sartoris to The Reivers, Lynn Levins answers the criticism that the fictional world of William Faulkner is not heroic enough. Her study analyzes his heroic design--his rendering of the events of his rural community of Yoknapatawpha against scenes from myth, classical drama, epic poetry, and chivalric and historical romance. In each case Faulkner is not parodying traditional literary modes to focus on the grotesque diminution of legend and myth in Yoknapatawpha County; rather he is writing in As I Lay Dying and Old Man and The Hamlet of the fulfillment of an ethical obligation. When that obligation is met in spite of temptations and difficulties, then the action of Anse Burden or the tall convict or the idiot Ike Snopes approaches heroic proportions. Behind the chivalric framework of the tall convict's epic journey or the identification of Thomas Sutpen as the old Greek tragic hero lies a heroic ideal. By employing such a design Faulkner affirms man's historical continuity and asserts his belief that in the twentieth century the heroic is still possible.

The Oxford Handbook of the Literature of the U.S. South brings together contemporary views of the literature of the region in a series of chapters employing critical tools not traditionally used in approaching Southern literature. It assumes ideas of the South--global, multicultural, plural: more Souths than South--that would not have been embraced two or three decades ago, and it similarly expands the idea of literature itself. For more than eighty years, Faulkner criticism has attempted to "see all Yoknapatawpha," the fictional Mississippi county in which the author set all but four of his novels as well as more than fifty short stories. One of the most ambitious of these attempts is the ongoing Digital Yoknapatawpha, an online project that is encoding the texts set in Faulkner’s mythical county into a complex database with sophisticated front-end visualizations. In Digitizing Faulkner, the contributors to the project share their findings and reflections on what digital research can mean for Faulkner studies and, by example, other bodies of literature. The essays examine Faulkner’s characters, events, locations, and visualizations, as well as offering more theoretical reflections on digitally mapping specific texts and stories, including the pedagogical implications of this digital approach.
