This book is centred on the practitioner-led Computer Arts Society founded in 1969 and formed to address creative computation in all the arts – performance, poetry, text, sound, sculpture and graphics. The objectives and achievements of the Computer Arts Society are presented as realised through their members and exhibitions to the mid-1970s. The Society’s co-founder is Dr George Mallen, a pioneer of cybernetic systems and cultural applications of computing. Creative Simulations contains new research including Mallen’s early work with cybernetician Gordon Pask, whose concepts of interdisciplinarity were influential on the ground-breaking Ecogame (1970). Led by Mallen, Ecogame was a collaborative Computer Arts Society project, an early embodiment of computer technology into art and the first multi-media interactive gaming system in the UK. Pask’s influence in Mallen’s subsequent role at the Royal College of Art where he instigated the first computerlab facilities for artists, is examined. A recently discovered lecture given by Mallen is transcribed, along with reproduction of historic texts by Stephen Willats and John Lansdown (two of his colleagues), which add context to this history of interdisciplinary artistic innovation in the digital realm. Illustrations include art works, ephemera, exhibition posters and installations, preparatory drawings, computing equipment and associated flow charts and diagrams, many appearing here in print for the first time.

Collective Creativity combines complex and ambivalent concepts. While ‘creativity’ is currently experiencing an inflationary boom in popularity, the term ‘collective’ appeared, until recently, rather controversial due to its ideological implications in twentieth-century politics. In a world defined by global cultural practice, the notion of collectivity has gained new relevance. This publication discusses a number of concepts of creativity and shows that, in opposition to the traditional ideal of the individual as creative genius, cultural theorists today emphasize the collaborative nature of creativity; they show that ‘creativity makes alterity, discontinuity and difference attractive’. "Drawing on five-years of work and research on simulated learning experiences with actors, this book describes their implementation in social work classes on social work practice, policy, and research in the School of Social Work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). PhD students took the lead in developing and implementing many simulations, worked with instructors to tie the simulations to learning objectives, and facilitated student discussion and reflection. Emphasis was given to understanding social work competencies in the context of issues of social injustice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Staged in simulation house, in classrooms, in a library setting and online, the simulations included a collaboration with the UIUC police and with librarians at UIUC and the University of Washington, Tacoma. The book describes how brave spaces were created to facilitate difficult conversations, sharing, and reflections rather than grading performance. Challenges included resource and time constraints, concerns about re-traumatizing students or stereotyping experiences, and reluctance to include simulations in social work classes. It provides an immersive learning experience for students and instructors alike; simulations emerge as a paradigm shift in social work education as it allows them to become more alive and accountable to the multifaceted, complex, and human elements of social work practice.
