This book explores how creativity is increasingly designed, marketed, and produced with digital products and services — a process referred to as softwarization. If ‘being creative’ has developed into one of the paradigmatic architectures of power for framing the contemporary subject, then an essential component of this architecture involves its material and symbolic configuration through tools. From image editors to digital audio workstations, video editors to game engines, these modern tools are used by creatives every day, and mastering these increasingly complex technologies is now a near-compulsory pathway to creative work. Despite their ubiquity in cultural production, few have sought to theorize them in aggregate and with interdisciplinary breadth. By bringing disparate creative and methodological traditions in one volume, this book provides a comprehensive overview of approaches for understanding this complex, emerging, and dynamic field that speaks beyond the disciplinary categories of ‘tool,’ ‘instrument,’ and/or ‘software’. It makes a unique intervention in the fields of cultural production and the cultural and creative industries.

Make Fail Repeat Creative Labor In The Start Up Age written by Alberto Lusoli and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-07-14 with Social Science categories.

This book examines how the concept of 'Start-up' has transcended its original acceptation as a synonym for an early-stage, hi-tech company, to become a historically specific way of knowing and acting in the world. 'Start-up' is everywhere. The term has been employed since the 1970s to indicate any company with a limited operating history and in a phase of market discovery. In the 1990s, the term gained a more preciseconnotation, one connected to the kind of experimental, technology-based, and venture-backed businessesthat became the most visible embodiment of the New Economy techno-utopianism. Today, the term is widely known and used beyond managerial circles, so much so that it has become a subject of TV shows such as Shark Tank, MTV’s Dropout, and HBO’s irreverent series Silicon Valley. 'Start-up' is no longer just an economic and managerial concept but, the book argues, also a cultural phenomenon that is reshaping the way we conceive work in the 21st century. It does this by furthering the idea that withdrawal from traditional disciplinary regimes such as formal education and wage labor is a necessary step on the pathtoward professional realization and personal freedom. But what happens when one decides to leave the safe harbor of regular employment and set sail on the tumultuous waters of independent work? The book addresses this question through a 22-month ethnographic investigation of the Vancouver new media and digital industries. Through interviews with creative practitioners and participation in informal gatheringsfor tech workers, the book provides a compelling perspective on creative work in the start-up age.

The Screens Of Virtual Production written by Sian Mitchell and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-04-24 with Performing Arts categories.

This book is the first dedicated edited collection that explores the virtualisation of screen-making processes from pre-production to post-production, while attuning to the aesthetic, ideological and performative contexts upended by these integrated technologies. This book explores what is real in virtual production, as a provocative one, implicitly drawing on the philosophies of the moving image and the recent work on new forms of post-human perceptual realism. This edited collection is divided into the following four themed sections. Section One, It’s Always Been Real: Contemporising Virtual Production, addresses the histories of film realism in relationship to visual technologies, providing both a theoretical and philosophical ‘anchor’ point for the collection, and a necessary genealogy. Section Two, The Body Becomes You: Performing Virtual Production, examines the transformation that occurs in immersive virtual worlds, while also exploring how the body is itself virtualised. Section Three, Skin Deep: Gazing with Virtual Production, addresses the way race, ethnicity, gender and environment are supposedly equalised, and yet are still found to reproduce the colonised looking regimes of western, mainstream screen culture. Section Four, Whose Work? Labouring with Virtual Production, draws together writing that examines the way production processes have been transformed, affecting not only work patterns but also the way aesthetics, form and function, operate. This book encompasses many production themes and will appeal to media students and professionals interested in the production of film.

Platforms And Cultural Production written by Thomas Poell and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-14 with Social Science categories.

The widespread uptake of digital platforms – from YouTube and Instagram to Twitch and TikTok – is reconfiguring cultural production in profound, complex, and highly uneven ways. Longstanding media industries are experiencing tremendous upheaval, while new industrial formations – live-streaming, social media influencing, and podcasting, among others – are evolving at breakneck speed. Poell, Nieborg, and Duffy explore both the processes and the implications of platformization across the cultural industries, identifying key changes in markets, infrastructures, and governance at play in this ongoing transformation, as well as pivotal shifts in the practices of labor, creativity, and democracy. The authors foreground three particular industries – news, gaming, and social media creation – and also draw upon examples from music, advertising, and more. Diverse in its geographic scope, Platforms and Cultural Production builds on the latest research and accounts from across North America, Western Europe, Southeast Asia, and China to reveal crucial differences and surprising parallels in the trajectories of platformization across the globe. Offering a novel conceptual framework grounded in illuminating case studies, this book is essential for students, scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to understand how the institutions and practices of cultural production are transforming – and what the stakes are for understanding platform power.

The Intangibilities Of Form written by John Roberts and has been published by Verso Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-05 with Art categories.

In this intellectually wide-ranging book John Roberts develops a labor theory of culture as a model for explaining the dynamics of avant-garde art and the expansion of artistic authority in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. From Duchamp to Warhol, conceptual art, and the "post-visual" practices of the moment, Roberts explores the relationship between artistic labor and productive labor, and the limits and possibilities of authorship. In doing so, he confronts a recurring theme of both conservative and radical detractors of modern art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries: how is skill, and the seeming absence of skill in modern art, to be theorized and evaluated? Drawing on cognitive psychology, labor process theory, social anthropology, and debates in contemporary political philosophy, Roberts' book establishes a new critical topography for examining the cultural form of art today.

Semionauts Of Tradition written by Juliette Yu-Ming Lizeray and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-16 with Music categories.

This book explores questions of identity, cultural change and creativity from the perspective of contemporary musicians currently engaged in redefining Asian musical traditions and notions of heritage in Singapore. Drawing on the fields of anthropology, cultural studies, and ethnomusicology, Semionauts of Tradition focuses on emerging millennial musicians and explores the complex and interwoven cultural, national, musical, and personal identifications in their discourse and music practice. It shows how they create fluid, hybrid and counter-hegemonic forms of expression, representation and identity through their navigation of diverse cultural worlds, their incorporation of a myriad of elements into their own identities and music, and their contestations of preconceived notions of difference and tradition. The book exposes paradoxes within current thinking about ‘multiracialism’, ‘racial harmony’, the ‘East/West divide’ and ‘tradition versus modernity,’ andproposes new ways of understanding identity, cultural change and creativity in a highly globalised, and diverse nation. This highly-original polyvocal account of a burgeoning music scene includes photos, musical scores and reaction pieces by musicians. It is a timely contribution to global discussions about ‘multiculturalism from below,’ as well as musical, cultural and national identities in a postcolonial Southeast Asian setting, from the viewpoint of artists engaged in creative meaning-making. "This captivating book explores - with tremendous intellectual vitality - the dialectic relationships between the cultural, ethnic and national identities of Singapore’s creative youth, and their creative practice. A compelling read!" Dr Liora Bresler, Professor, University of Illinois "A well-researched and thoughtfully well-written book about the diverse forms of music in Singapore and the musicians who created it." - Jeremy Monteiro, jazz pianist, singer, composer, and music educator "This wonderfully lucid and compelling book analyzes the musical and cultural creativity of young Singaporean musicians growing up in a multicultural and ethnically plural society, bringing Asian and Western musical cultures into creative dialogue." - Dr Deborah Pacini Hernandez, Professor Emeritus, Tufts University "A thought provoking dialogue on contemporary Singaporean music!" -Eric Watson, composer, conductor, music technologist and pedagogue

How Music Empowers written by Steven Gamble and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-15 with Music categories.

How Music Empowers argues that empowerment is the key to unlocking the long-standing mystery of how music moves us. Drawing upon cutting-edge research in embodied cognitive science, psychology, and cultural studies, the book provides a new way of understanding how music affects listeners. The argument develops from our latest conceptions of what it is to be human, investigating experiences of listening to popular music in everyday life. Through listening, individuals have the potential to redefine themselves, gain resilience, connect with other people, and make a difference in society. Applying a groundbreaking theoretical framework to postmillennial rap and metal, the book uncovers why vast numbers of listeners engage with music typically regarded as ‘social problems’ or dismissed as ‘extreme’. In the first ever comparative analytical treatment of rap and metal music, twenty songs are analysed as case studies that reveal the empowering potential of listening. The book details how individuals interact with rap and metal communities in a self-perpetuating process which keeps these thriving music cultures – and the listeners themselves – alive and well. Can music really change the world? How Music Empowers answers: yes, because it changes us. How Music Empowers will interest scholars and researchers of popular music, ethnomusicology, music psychology, music therapy, and music education.
