This book collects research contributions concerning quantitative approaches to characterize originality and universality in language. The target audience comprises researchers and experts in the field but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students. Creativity might be considered as a morphogenetic process combining universal features with originality. While quantitative methods applied to text and music reveal universal features of language and music, originality is a highly appreciated feature of authors, composers, and performers. In this framework, the different methods of traditional problems of authorship attribution and document classification provide important insights on how to quantify the unique features of authors, composers, and styles. Such unique features contrast, and are restricted by, universal signatures, such as scaling laws in word-frequency distribution, entropy measures, long-range correlations, among others. This interplay between innovation and universality is also an essential ingredient of methods for automatic text generation. Innovation in language becomes relevant when it is imitated and spread to other speakers and musicians. Modern digital databases provide new opportunities to characterize and model the creation and evolution of linguistic innovations on historical time scales, a particularly important example of the more general problem of spreading of innovations in complex social systems. This multidisciplinary book combines scientists from various different backgrounds interested in quantitative analysis of variations (synchronic and diachronic) in language and music. The aim is to obtain a deeper understanding of how originality emerges, can be quantified, and propagates.

Language and Creativity has become established as a pivotal text for courses in English Language, Linguistics and Literacy. Creativity in language has conventionally been regarded as the preserve of institutionalised discourses such as literature and advertising, and individual gifted minds. In this ground-breaking book, bestselling author Ronald Carter explores the idea that creativity, far from being simply a property of exceptional people, is an exceptional property of all people. Drawing on a range of real examples of everyday conversations and speech, from flatmates in a student house and families on holiday to psychotherapy sessions and chat-lines, the book argues that creativity is an all-pervasive feature of everyday language. Using close analysis of naturally occurring language, taken from a unique 5 million word corpus, Language and Creativity reveals that speakers commonly make meanings in a variety of creative ways, in a wide range of social contexts and for a diverse set of reasons. This Routledge Linguistics Classic is here reissued with a new preface from the author, covering a range of key topics from e-language and internet discourse to English language teaching and world Englishes. Language and Creativity continues to build on the previous theories of creativity, offering a radical contribution to linguistic, literary and cultural theory. A must for anyone interested in the creativity of our everyday speech.

Impressionism, the iPhone, democracy, Uber-when we think about creativity, we most often think of things. We also narrow in on the few, those rare creators who seem to have something we lack. These tendencies quickly take us off track, perpetuating a myth and unknowingly pushing us further away from the possible. Here's the truth: Creativity is about the possible. It's the seed of any human advancement ever made or yet to be imagined. Most important and powerful of all, creativity is a uniquely human capacity that each of us possesses-including you. The story of creativity is the story of who we are, a story still unfolding. It's time we come to understand it and learn how each of us can contribute our verse. It's time we understand this language of man and learn to speak creativity. The Language of Man provides more than needed understanding; it offers a powerful framework for creating. If you want to create or innovate, this book is indispensable.

In the days following 9/11 Europe was placid on the surface, but underneath, it was tense and preparing to deal with an expanding network of terrorists already in place and planning to strike. France had the best preparations in place, having been tested constantly by terrorist organizations aligned with Muslim radicals associated with a myriad of causes dating back to the late 1950s, when its colonial empire in northern Africa began to give way. The attacks on New York City and Washington, DC were just the beginning. In Paris, two Pakistani agents were activated and tasked to assassinate the First Lady of France and the U.S. Ambassador. Tony Chase, a New York attorney and investment banker, who through happenstance escaped being in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on the morning of 9/11, was traveling through Paris on business, when a personal excursion to Bordeaux placed him close to the center of this sinister plot. This thriller takes you through sectors of Paris not frequented by tourists, ventures through its vast and efficient Metro system, travels to Bordeaux on the TGV France's high-speed train, and wanders through this beautiful city and the surrounding wine producing areas as a team of terrorists works to outwit the French internal security apparatus.
