This book explores Italian science fiction from 1861, the year of Italy’s unification, to the present day, focusing on how this genre helped shape notions of Otherness and Normalness. In particular, Italian Science Fiction draws upon critical race studies, postcolonial theory, and feminist studies to explore how migration, colonialism, multiculturalism, and racism have been represented in genre film and literature. Topics include the role of science fiction in constructing a national identity; the representation and self-representation of “alien” immigrants in Italy; the creation of internal “Others,” such as southerners and Roma; the intersections of gender and race discrimination; and Italian science fiction’s transnational dialogue with foreign science fiction. This book reveals that though it is arguably a minor genre in Italy, science fiction offers an innovative interpretive angle for rethinking Italian history and imagining future change in Italian society.

As the author-pay model spreads across academic publishing, what are the possible consequences? Will the current rage for open-source scholarship actually accomplish anything other than shifting the furniture around on the Titanic? Will not Open Source in combination with Digital Humanitiesfurther destroy the very idea of "slow" and "thoughtful" work in humanistic studies?...It would seem that the author-pay model (formerly attributed to predatory publishers) is just another way of extracting tribute for the "privilege" of being published-enforceable only because academia has ratcheted up the stakes by enforcing research metrics and citations, in the public universities a practice that is primarily enforced by external "industrial" connections. Almost all public and private universities are heading toward measuring output with metrics-many academics now tailoring their CVs to show why they are "important," mirroring the social-media campaigns of celebrities and politicians, and many universities now citing their own "corporate" rankings when promoting their product (the University, the Institute, the Department, the Professor). Where this is all going is toward increased precarity for anyone who does not play the game. Individual, solitary scholars will have few options. Gavin Keeney, "Symptom 'A': The End," Knowledge, Spirit, LawKnowledge, Spirit, Law - as project - is a de facto phenomenology of scholarship in the age of Cognitive Capitalism. The six essays (plus Appendices) presented here cover topics and circle themes related to the problems and crises specific to neo-liberal academia, while proposing creative paths around the various obstructions. The obstructions include metrics-obsessed academia, circular and incestuous peer review, digitalization of research as stalking horse for text- and data-mining, and violation by global corporate fiat of Intellectual Property Rights and the Moral Rights of Authors. These issues, while addressed obliquely in the main text, definitively inform the various implied proscriptive aspects of the essays and, via the Introduction and Appendices, underscore the necessity of developing new-old means to no obvious end in the production of knowledge - that is to say, a return to forms of non-instrumentalized intellectual inquiry. Sylvie e Bruno, pubblicato nel 1889, è il terzo e ultimo romanzo di Lewis Carroll, ben più famoso come autore di “Alice nel paese delle meraviglie”. Il romanzo è piuttosto eterogeneo, e parti decisamente adatte ai ragazzi con semplici storie e filastrocche, si alternano con discussioni di tipo filosofico e religioso, o dialoghi che si svolgono sulla vena dell’assurdo, tipici dell’autore. Nelle due prefazioni che accompagnano i due volumi di cui si compone il libro (che infatti fu pubblicato in due tempi diversi) l’autore illustra la teoria che ispira il libro, e che propone uno stato di coscienza ordinaria (che si accompagna ad avvenimenti di vita reale del libro) e uno stato di coscienza “magica” (in cui il protagonista interagisce con una realtà non ordinaria, e incontra le due fate, Sylvie e Bruno, che danno il titolo al libro). Un libro complesso e apprezzabile che ovviamente non ebbe lo stesso successo della storia di Alice, ma che fu poi rivalutato nella seconda metà del Novecento, insieme a molta letteratura fantastica. Impreziosiscono il libro le illustrazioni originali di Harry Furniss. Traduzione di Silvia Cecchini.

Ci avevano indicato gli obiettivi- i soldi, la famiglia, il potere, l'eccellenza - e la strada, fatta di determinazione, sudore della fronte e pensiero positivo: se cadi rialzati, prova ancora e ancora; ci siamo rialzati e abbiamo visto che a cadere era il mondo intorno a noi. Mai come in questi anni è diventato chiaro che l'idea di successo che avevamo in mente è una condanna e che tra volere e potere c'è di mezzo il capitalismo, con tutte le disuguaglianze (e le catastrofi) che si porta dietro. Dobbiamo dunque ridisegnare quell'idea? Dare al termine successo significati nuovi?Jack Halberstam, tra i più noti e originali teorici queer in circolazione, propone una via più radicale e ci guida nell'affollato mondo dei perdenti: lì dove smarrire la strada, non sapere, dimenticare ed essere dimenticati, essere sconvenienti e indecorosi, indisciplinati e improduttivi (tutte cose che le persone queer hanno sempre fatto particolarmente bene) si rivelano strategie possibili per stare al mondo. Correndo il rischio - anzi inseguendolo- di non essere preso sul serio, Halberstam si muove tra teoria alta e bassa, si concede virate controintuitive e disgressioni, si addentra negli «archivi di cose stupide» ricercando forme di conoscenza lontane dal rigore delle discipline. Accade così che in queste pagine vivano insieme Gramsci e SpongeBob, Jamaica Kincaid e il pesciolino Nemo, Saidiya Hartman, Tom of Finland, Valerie Solanas e un'armata di galline in fuga dal pollaio: con loro, Halberstam ci invita a pensare altrimenti, a sperimentare nuove alleanze, a preferire l'ombra alla luce piena, l'illeggibilità al riconoscimento. A desiderare un mondo in cui nessuno ce la fa da solo e nessuno viene lasciato indietro.

La coscienza è davvero ciò che ci distingue dagli altri esseri animati? È riducibile a processi chimici e meccanici? Se sì, che parte hanno in questi processi il dolore e l’amore, i sogni e la gioia? Queste sono alcune delle grandi domande su cui si sono arrovellati filosofi e scienziati a partire da Cartesio. Ma in questo volume, ormai considerato un classico, Dennett ha sostenuto che le teorie sulla coscienza sono tutte sbagliate, anche se la loro semplicità intuitiva ci spinge a crederle vere. È vero invece che non c’è traccia nel nostro cervello di un “autore centrale”, produttore di un unico e definitivo flusso di coscienza. La nostra mente non funziona come una dittatura o una monarchia bensì come una democrazia molto sofisticata. “Spiegherò i vari fenomeni che compongono ciò che chiamiamo coscienza, mostrando come essi siano tutti degli effetti fisici delle attività del cervello. Proporrò analogie, esperimenti di pensiero e altri espedienti per rompere vecchi abiti di pensiero e aiutare a organizzare i fatti in un’unica visione coerente sorprendentemente diversa dal tradizionale punto di vista sulla coscienza.”
