The Third IUTAM Symposium on Creep in Structures was held at Leicester University in September 1980 thereby continuing the tradition of a ten yearly review of progress in structural creep initiated by the previous symposia held at Stanford University in 1960 and Chalmers University in 1970. The thirty eight papers and their discussions cont ained in this volume testify to the vigour of research into the creep of structures at the present time. During the last ten years a gradual change of emphasis has occurred in creep research from studies of deformation and stability towards the description of continuum damage and creep crack propagation. At the same time design techniques have developed based upon reference stress techniques and bounding theorems, and a continued interest has been maintained in the development of constitutive equations and in stability studies. All these developments are reflected in the compos ition of the papers in the volume and in the discussions and reviews.

The advent of steam turbines and the sudden rise of steam temperature at the beginning of the 20th century gave a great impetus to the start of scientific research on metal creep and high-temperature strength. Then aeronautical and aerospace exploitation in the 1940's and 1950's enlarged the scope of creep research. In this context, the first IUTAM Symposium on "Creep in Structures" was held at Stanford University in July 1960, and about 60 participants from seven countries around the world discussed their recent results on this problem. Subsequent innovation in science and technology, as in nuclear and new energy technology, new materials, large scale integration of semiconductors etc., has claimed solutions to new and challenging problems in this fundamental field of applied mechanics. In order to discuss the new topics in this discipline, the IUTAM Symposia "Creep in Structures" thereafter have been held every ten years; i.e. the second in 1970 at Gothenburg, Sweden, the third in 1980 at Leicester, U.K. and the fourth in 1990 at Cracow,Poland. The First (1960) and Second Symposium (1970) were concerned mainly with the phenomenological law of creep and creep analysis of structural elements, whereas the issues of the Third Symposium (1980) shifted toward the problems of creep damage, creep crack growth, practical and effective design methods, etc.

This volume records the proceedings of an international conference organised as a tribute to the contribution made by Professor H. Fessler over the whole of his pro fessionallife, in the field of applied stress analysis. The conference, held at the Univer sity of Nottingham on 30 and 31 August 1990, was timed to coincide with the date of his formal retirement from the post of Professor of Experimental Stress Analysis in the University. The idea grew from discussions between some of Professor Fessler's academic associates from Nottingham and elsewhere. An organising committee was set up, and it was decided to invite contributions to the conference in the form of review papers and original research papers in the field of experimental, theoretical and computational stress analysis. The size of the response, both in papers submitted and in attendance at the conference, indicates that the idea proved attractive to many of his peers, former associates and research students. A bound copy of the volume is to be presented to Professor Fessler at the conference dinner on 30 August 1990.

The first IUTAM Symposium on Creep in Structures was held in Stanford, Cal. 1960 (Proceedings, ed. N. J. HOFF, Springer-Verlag 1962). That meeting reflected an intense research activity in the field of structural creep, and many important results were pre sented. In spite of this progress design rules for high temperature equipment are still often inadequate. Design against creep deformation and creep rupture is all too often based only oli experience and intuition. With technological processes moving into ever higher temperature regions the effects of creep must be given steadily increasing attention. The IUTAM Bureau in 1967 decided to arrange a Second Symposium on Creep in Structures, to be held in Gothenburg under the chairmanship of F. K. G. ODQVIST. This meeting was to take stock of the progress made in the ten years since the first symposium. Notable advances in the establishment of a sound phenomenological theory, refined experimental techniques and several new methods of structural analysis of shells in the creep range gave impetus to this second symposium. Problems of rupture and stability under complex loads had been studied and many new results in these fields were presented and discussed. Attendance was strictly limited to persons active in the field covered by the symposium. Financial support was generously provided by IUTAM, Chalmers University, the Swedish Board for Technical Develonment and four Swedish industrial companies (ASEA, Sand mens Jernverk, Saab-Scania, Volvo).
