Quando você pensa sobre a vida espiritual, você tem que pensar sobre o crescimento natural. E isso não deveria nos surpreender, porque quando você pensa sobre a vida de qualquer forma, a vida é igual a crescimento. O crescimento é evidência da vida. Você planta uma semente no solo, e então ela cresce e se torna uma planta de completa estatura (gr. pleroma), o que significa plenitude. Essa é a natureza da vida comum, o crescimento rumo à plenitude deve ser natural. Você tem um pequeno filhote de cachorro em sua casa e ele de repente cresce e torna-se um cachorro grande. Você tem um bebê em sua casa e de repente ele cresce para tornar-se um adulto. E essa é a forma como a vida funciona. A vida essencialmente pode ser definida como a dinâmica do desenvolvimento ou a dinâmica do crescimento. A vida é igual a crescimento. Onde há vida, há crescimento. Onde há crescimento, há vida. Esta verdade aplica-se no reino espiritual. Deus nos deu a vida espiritual em Cristo e pretende que esta vida cresça rumo à maturidade, ela não pode ficar estática. Eu penso que uma das coisas mais difíceis na raça humana é o "retardo", ou seja, algum tipo de deformidade que impeça a criança de se desenvolver fisicamente ou mentalmente. Nós vemos isso como uma triste realidade na vida. A incapacidade de crescer espiritualmente é, igualmente, uma tragédia, na verdade, é mais trágico, porque sem crescimento não se pode usufruir de todas as bênçãos espirituais que o Senhor tem para aqueles que amadurecem n'Ele. Cristo tem o aperfeiçoamento e espera que aqueles que estão n'Ele tenham a mesma estatura. O crescimento espiritual é, então, um privilégio, mas também é uma obrigação, uma responsabilidade para nós. A meta do desenvolvimento espiritual é ser como Cristo é. E nós sabemos disso, porque a Bíblia nos diz assim. Paulo declarou: "Uma coisa faço, e é que, esquecendo-me das coisas que atrás ficam, e avançando para as que estão diante de mim, prossigo para o alvo, pelo prêmio da soberana vocação de Deus em Cristo Jesus" (Filipenses 3, 13-14). Nossa luta diária como filhos de Deus é guerrear com todas as forças e a constante ajuda do Espírito Santo, para chegarmos à estatura de Cristo.
