Partindo do contexto da instalação de UPPs (Unidades de Polícia Pacificadora) nas favelas do Rio de Janeiro para “salvaguardar” a segurança da cidade durante megaeventos esportivos (como a Copa do Mundo de 2014 e as Olimpíadas de 2016), Renata Souza acompanha a experiência cotidiana na favela da Maré e demonstra como a política de “pacificação” desconhece a dinâmica comunitária da favela. A partir da hipótese de um espírito comunitário na Maré, a autora investiga iniciativas independentes de comunicação e cultura dos jovens mareenses (de que são exemplos o jornal O Cidadão, a página virtual Maré Vive, o aplicativo Nós Por Nós, o bloco Se Benze Que Dá, o Sarau da Roça e a feira de trocas Maré 0800), além de suas vivências pessoais como cria da favela, para mostrar uma juventude que resiste culturalmente para existir socialmente. A obra, publicada pela primeira vez em 2018, é uma adaptação da tese de doutorado da autora sobre a resistência da juventude negra à militarização da vida. O livro traz ainda um conjunto de textos escritos em homenagem a Marielle Franco, com quem a autora trabalhou e conviveu por cerca de vinte anos, sendo inclusive chefe de seu gabinete na Câmara dos Vereadores do Rio de Janeiro, até sua execução sumária, em março de 2018.

This book analyses a South-to-South connection between media activists and artivists – artists who are activists – in the Global South. The authors, Andrea Medrado and Isabella Rega, emphasise the urgent need to engage in South-to-South dialogues in order to create more sustainable connections between Global South communities and as an essential step towards identifying and facing global problems, such as state repression, social inequality and climate crises. Medrado and Rega analyse the characteristics of this connection, identify its unique contributions to the study of media and social change and discuss its long-term sustainability. By focusing on the textually mediated reactions of local residents, social movements, and media producers to policy changes implemented in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, this book studies the development of literacy as a tool to mobilize, perform, and disseminate protest. Researching Protest Literacies presents a combination of ethnographic fieldwork and extensive archival research to analyse how traditional and technology-driven literacy practices informed a new cycle of social protest in favelas from 2006-2016. Chapters trace nuanced interactions, document changing power balances, and in doing so conceptualize five forms of literacy used to enact social change - campaigning literacies, memorial literacies, media-activist literacies, arts-activist literacies, and demonstration literacies. Building on these, the study posits protest literacies as a new way of researching the role of contemporary literacy in protest. Rio de Janeiro's favelas have become well-known sites of gang and police violence. Since the 1970s, dangerous networks between drug traffickers and corrupt state actors have transformed these poor neighborhoods into sites of armed conflict and political repression, limiting residents' ability to speak out against violence or demand their democratic rights. Despite these challenges, nonviolent politics remains an integral element in Cidade de Deus--City of God--one of Rio's most dangerous and famous favelas. In Activism under Fire, Anjuli Fahlberg provides an original account of how conflict activism operates in Cidade de Deus. Drawing on fieldwork, virtual ethnography, and participatory action research, Fahlberg documents how activists strategically navigate local constraints and opportunities--including gendered governing dynamics and racialized practices of solidarity--to create space for non-violent governance amid armed repression. By working within urban, national, and transnational political networks and social movements, local activists bring resources into their neighborhood and protest violence while avoiding dangerous alliances. Activism under Fire demonstrates that non-violent collective action is possible amid extreme poverty and violence, and shows what strategies enable it to survive and effect political change. In so doing, Fahlberg reveals the possibilities for collective action in violent and chaotic democratic states, not only in Latin America, but throughout the world.

"In this work, Desirée Poets posits that contemporary Brazil is a settler colony. Based on ethnographic research and her experiences growing up in Brazil, the book tells the stories of communities in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Belo Horizonte-two quilombos, two Indigenous movements, and a favela-to unravel the continuities and discontinuities of Brazil's settler colonial structure. As Poets argues, settler colonialism is renewed through expectations of Indigenous and quilombola authenticity as well as through militarization, incarceration, genocide, and marginalization that continuously attempt to dispossess and eliminate Black and Indigenous peoples from the political landscape, including in its urban centers. Placing these dynamics under one analytic lens, Poets navigates how the dependent settler capitalist state has related to different Indigenous and Black groups with distinct yet interrelated effects. She thereby challenges the still-common separation of Black and Indigenous politics and peoples in policy, activism, and scholarship. Building on the work of Black and Indigenous organizers and thinkers from Brazil and beyond, she makes the case for an intersectional and transnational lens that centers the intellectual, political, and creative labor of Black and Indigenous peoples. The book foregrounds their resistances to settler capitalism and dependency. Common themes in Brazilian and Latin American studies emerge, and Poets's theoretical contributions are relevant to other countries. This book is the first of two volumes that bring together the works presented at the congress "Contributions of Psychology to COVID-19", organized by the Interamerican Society of Psychology in 2020. This was one of the first virtual international meetings on psychology and COVID-19 in the world and brought together researchers and professionals from South, Central and North America in a single online event. The content of both volumes includes many of the first issues addressed by researchers, scholars, and practitioners across the Americas at the start of the pandemic – before vaccines, before knowledge of treatment and impact, before our worlds and daily lives were forever changed. Chapters in the first volume focus on the impacts of the pandemic in mental health, social and family dynamics, educational processes and the work of health professionals. Chapters in the second volume are dedicated to studies addressing the impacts of the pandemic in vulnerable populations; proposals of psychological interventions to deal with the distress caused by COVID-19; strategies of coping, resilience and adaptation; and the development of psychological instruments of measurement and assessments during the pandemic. The content of these two volumes marks a baseline for the collective work initiated by psychologists who came together to answer the call to combat the pandemic across the Americas. In that sense, both volumes are truly a “snapshot in time” that could help us assess in the future how much progress we have made to apply psychology to the pressing demands of our time.
