From sun-kissed olive groves to frosty pine glades, cricket is played in every corner of continental Europe. But the game is fragile at its frontiers, struggling for profile and participants on a football-obsessed continent. Cricket on the Continent reflects on how the sport was exported, introduced and developed in mainland Europe, and the challenges it faced (and continues to face). It examines what lies in store in an uncertain future; casts a critical eye at the role of the ICC, the game-changing opportunities the Olympics could bring and the unique origins and development in different countries. These fundamental questions are confronted head on in a tale of matches, machinations and miracles, and a voyage through a fascinating patchwork of cultural nuances, colourful characters and cricketing intrigue that form the map of cricket in Europe.

Gavin Stevens was a talented schoolboy cricketer who played 'B' Grade district cricket for Glenelg D.C.C. at the age of 14. Originally a fast bowler, Gavin developed into a powerful opening batsman. Very early in his career he forced his way into the South Australian state side. He struggled early to establish himself but time in England, following the early death of both parents, matured him and he returned a better player. Success in his final two years of domestic first class cricket saw him selected in the Australian team for the inaugural full tour of Pakistan and India. His great joy soon became a nightmare as he joined the list of players who succumbed to serious illness. In Gavin's case not only was his career threatened but so was his life. The tour changed him in several ways and he never played first-class cricket again. The book titled NEAR DEATH ON THE SUB-CONTINENT - THE GAVIN STEVENS STORY is a wonderful tale. It looks at Steven's early struggles and ends with a look at his business career that is truly remarkable. The story of Bradman and his thoughts on Test players, especially Stevens, is interesting. The book of 183 pages includes statistics of Stevens' career and has some previously unpublished photos. With stiffened wrappers the book is a must for those interested in Australian tours to the sub-continent and South Australian cricket in the 1950s.

'A highly entertaining read, deftly melding social history with sporting memoir and travelogue' Mail on Sunday A history of Latin America through cricket Cricket was the first sport played in almost every country of the Americas - earlier than football, rugby or baseball. In 1877, when England and Australia played the inaugural Test match at the MCG, Uruguay and Argentina were already ten years into their derby played across the River Plate. The visionary cricket historian Rowland Bowen said that, during the highpoint of cricket in South America between the two World Wars, the continent could have provided the next Test nation. In Buenos Aires, where British engineers, merchants and meatpackers flocked to make their fortune, the standard of cricket was high: towering figures like Lord Hawke and Plum Warner took star-studded teams of Test cricketers to South America, only to be beaten by Argentina. A combined Argentine, Brazilian and Chilean team took on the first-class counties in England in 1932. The notion of Brazilians and Mexicans playing T20 at the Maracana or the Azteca today is not as far-fetched as it sounds. But Evita Burned Down Our Pavilion is also a social history of grit, industry and nation-building in the New World. West Indian fruit workers battled yellow fever and brutal management to carve out cricket fields next to the railway lines in Costa Rica. Cricket was the favoured sport of Chile's Nitrate King. Emperors in Brazil and Mexico used the game to curry favour with Europe. The notorious Pablo Escobar even had a shadowy connection to the game. The fate of cricket in South America was symbolised by Eva Peron ordering the burning down of the Buenos Aires Cricket Club pavilion when the club refused to hand over their premises to her welfare scheme. Cricket journalists Timothy Abraham and James Coyne take us on a journey to discover this largely untold story of cricket's fate in the world's most colourful continent. Fascinating and surprising, Evita Burned Down Our Pavilion is a valuable addition to cricketing and social history.

A Corner of Every Foreign Field is an innovative and thought-provoking take on the history of cricket, looking beyond the scorecards to the pivotal issues of class, politics and imperialism that have shaped the game today. It charts how cricket has vied with football for power, commercial muscle and global reach, growing from a simple boys' game in England to a modern worldwide sport. In exploring cricket's evolution, Tim Brooks calls on the views and anecdotes of greats like W. G. Grace, Don Bradman, Viv Richards and Virat Kohli. Along the way, he peers deep into the game's soul and poses questions on behalf of every cricket fan. Is cricket truly global? Why did the game take root in some countries but not in others? What are the threats and opportunities for the sport? Who are the next cricket superpowers? How do you strike a balance between honouring tradition and reforming to capture the imagination of future generations? Written by an expert in the global development of cricket, the book sets out a unique vision for the future.
