"Crime" é o sétimo volume das "Obras Completas" de Luiz Gama. Os textos aqui recolhidos foram divididos em oito partes. A primeira contém três artigos acerca da importância da identificação dos limites de uma jurisdição, discussão teórica cuja implicação é a defesa concreta de escravizados. A seguir, em "A injúria", Gama debate, em três textos, questões de natureza jurídico-criminal e defende a imprensa como fórum de salvaguarda de direitos — tema que retorna na histórica defesa a seu cliente Justiniano Silva em "O abuso da liberdade de opinião e de imprensa", da terceira parte. A abusiva batida policial ao estúdio de fotografia de Victor Telles, seguida de sua prisão e de mais cinco artistas, é o assunto de "A falsificação de moeda". Em "O roubo", quinta parte, o leitor acompanha a exaustiva investigação empreendida por Luiz Gama para a defesa do tesoureiro da alfândega de Santos, acusado do roubo milionário de 185 mil contos de réis do cofre da instituição. Nesta parte, encontra-se "O misterioso roubo da alfândega de Santos", o mais longo texto já escrito por Gama, em que se destaca não apenas seu já conhecido talento no direito, mas sobretudo sua personalidade detetivesca, encarnada no gosto sherloquiano pelo enigma a desvendar. "O homicídio" contém seis textos em que Gama discute na imprensa casos que tratavam do crime de homicídio ou tentativa de homicídio. Em "Ladrão que rouba ladrão", Gama trata da demanda de liberdade de uma escravizada, mediante o pagamento de alta quantia. Finalmente, na oitava parte, o leitor encontra cartas de Gama escritas nesse período.

This volume addresses an important historiographical gap by assessing the respective contributions of tradition and foreign influences to the 19th century codification of criminal law. More specifically, it focuses on the extent of French influence – among others – in European and American civil law jurisdictions. In this regard, the book seeks to dispel a number of myths concerning the French model’s actual influence on European and Latin American criminal codes. The impact of the Napoleonic criminal code on other jurisdictions was real, but the scope and extent of its influence were significantly less than has sometimes been claimed. The overemphasis on French influence on other civil law jurisdictions is partly due to a fundamental assumption that modern criminal codes constituted a break with the past. The question as to whether they truly broke with the past or were merely a degree of reform touches on a difficult issue, namely, the dichotomy between tradition and foreign influences in the codification of criminal law. Scholarship has unfairly ignored this important subject, an oversight that this book remedies.
