Iberian Crime Fiction is the first volume in English to provide an extensive overview of crime fiction in Spain and Portugal. While the origins of peninsular crime fiction are traced in Nancy Vosburg's introductory chapter to the volume, the essays focus on specific topics that provide readers with a sense of the development of the genre in the second half of the 20th-century and current trends in the 21st-century. Patty Hart, whose The Spanish Sleuth introduced English-speaking readers to early crime fiction in Spain, provides a summary account of the development of the crime novel from the 1950s through the 1980s, highlighting the major authors and works that set the stage for the boom that followed the establishment of the novela negra tradition in the 1970s. This tradition, spearheaded by Manuel Vazquez Montalban, is the subject of a separate essay by Maria Balibrea that analyzes the socio-political conditions that gave rise to the novela negra. NancyVosburg studies the emergence of a feminine/feminist crime novel in the 1980s and 1990s and the subversion of masculine codes associated with crime fiction, while Stewart King analyzes crime fiction from the Catalan, Basque, and Galician autonomous regions of Spain, focusing on the political realities that resulted in a different use of the genre as a vehicle of regional nationalism. David Knutson traces contemporary trends in Spanish crime fiction, beginning in the 1990s and up to the present. Paul Castro's essay documents the emergence of crime fiction in Portugal and the major works/authors through to the present.

This important intervention interrogates keystone features of the dominant European theoretical landscape in the field of populism studies, advancing existing debates and introducing new avenues of thought, in conjunction with insights from the contemporary Latin American political experience and perspectives. In each essay – the title a nod to the influential socialist thinker José Carlos Mariátegui, from whom the authors draw inspiration – leading Argentine scholars Paula Biglieri and Luciana Cadahia pair key dimensions of populism with diverse themes such as modern-day feminism, militancy, and neoliberalism, in order to stimulate discussion surrounding the constitutive nature, goals, and potential of populist social movements. Biglieri and Cadahia are unafraid to court provocation in their frank assessment of populism as a force which could bring about essential emancipatory social change to confront emerging right-wing trends in policy and leadership. At the same time, this fresh interpretation of a much-maligned political articulation is balanced by their denunciation of right-aligned populisms and their failure to bring to bear a sustainable alternative to contemporary neo-authoritarian forms of neoliberalism. In their place, they articulate a populism which offers a viable means of mobilizing a response to hegemonic forms of neoliberal discourse and government.

Crime Fiction from Spain: Murder in the Multinational State provides a comprehensive exploration of the relationship between detective fiction and national and cultural identities in post-Franco democratic Spain. What sort of stories are told about the nation within the state in the crime genre? How do the conventions of the crime story shape not only the production of national and cultural identities, but also their disruption? Combining criminological theories of crime and community with an analysis of the genre’s conventions, this study challenges the simple classification of Spanish crime fiction as texts written by Spaniards, set in Spain and with Spanish characters. Instead, it develops a dramatic new reading practice which allows for a greater understanding of the role of crime fiction in the construction and articulation of different and, at times, competing, national and cultural identities, including in the Basque Country, Catalonia and Galicia. Para aquel asesino, aquello se había convertido en una batalla personal, y estaba decidido a ganarla costara lo que costase...Me ha gustado la historia desde el primer momento, con una trama muy buena pero como siempre con esta autora, con algunas escenas duras, sin embargo es innegable la buena trama de misterio y lo mucho que trabaja en la personalidad del malo y en como combina la trama de suspense con la trama romántica, que en este caso, me ha gustado mucho aunque no sea el tema principal de la historia. Muy bueno El Rincón de la Novela RománticaHabía leído otras novelas de Brenda Novak y me gustaba su manera de escribir, pero no la había leído en ninguna historia de suspense, y la verdad es que es un género que sabe tratar. Le da la importancia apropiada a cada trama, creando argumentos interesantes y con unos personajes que saben transmitir unos sentimientos cargados de emociones. Cazadoras del Romance

Una corporación puede asesinar a decenas de miles de personas –como mostró la catástrofe de Bhopal, India, ocurrida en 1984— sin recibir castigo alguno. Eso ocurre porque las corporaciones, una especie de Alien en la tierra, poseen un objetivo único y muy preciso: el retorno, incrementado y en el menor tiempo posible, del capital invertido. Las grandes corporaciones, a la vez que se han adueñado del mundo, agotan los recursos naturales, contaminan aire, agua y suelo y realizan un crimen perfecto donde la humanidad es, a la vez, víctima y cómplice. Es víctima pues la catástrofe que el Corporoceno genera conduce a la Sexta extinción masiva de las especies. Es cómplice pues, al adquirir los productos que las corporaciones ofrecen, fortalece y enriquece a quienes depredan su planeta, su casa. La humanidad está a las puertas de un colapso civilizatorio global que amenaza terminar con las condiciones planetarias que permitieron la vida tal y como la conocemos. En este estudio se revisa tal fenómeno.
