Written for police departments with less than 75 officers, this book is concerned with establishing the identity of offenders, bringing about their apprehension, and producing evidence against them. The nature of criminal investigation, equipment of the investigating officer, the informer and an inventory of routine sources of information, constitute the subject matter of chapter 1. Chapter 2 deals with the important administrative problem of locating the investigative function in the organizational structure. Procedures are indicated in the approach to this problem by which the risks associated with specialization can be reduced through structuring the responsibility for case investigation within the patrol services. Techniques of interrogation as a key investigative tool, legal restrictions on police interrogation of a criminal suspect, impact of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Miranda v.
