La crisis en el mundo rural se da prácticamente desde que se habla de la oposición rural-urbano. Las transformaciones demográficas y territoriales acontecidas en España en los últimos dos siglos han desembocado en un fuerte desplazamiento de la población, desde el campo hacia las ciudades, y en una fuerte desagrarización de las comunidades. La agricultura hoy tan sólo ocupa a un escaso 4% de la población total española, y la población rural se ha reducido al 25%. El modelo de agricultura industrial, promovida a lo largo del siglo XX por todo tipo de organizaciones y administraciones públicas, ha generado un abandono masivo de la actividad, dejando un poso de desempleo, desestructuración social y dependencia del medio rural hacia los núcleos urbanos; y acarreando importantes problemáticas ecológicas. Las nuevas dinámicas poblacionales se entrecruzan con un proceso de desagrarización aún no finalizado, dibujando un panorama social altamente complejo y en constante evolución. La agricultura ha perdido peso tanto político y económico como social en el desarrollo del medio rural. En el presente número de Documentación Social recogemos algunos trabajos que en los últimos años articulan dos elementos, metodologías participativas y visiones agroecológicas del Desarrollo Rural, como formas de encarar esta secular crisis del medio rural español, desde el análisis a las propuestas de acción. Son trabajos innovadores que, de alguna forma y mediante las metodologías participativas aplicadas, tratan de hacer “ciencia con la gente”, para articular propuestas alternativas de desarrollo, o alternativas al desarrollo.

The aim of this book is to provide a synthesis of the newest research in Geography concerning the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s). Although the world is strongly interconnected, the majority of the chapters in this volume focus on Europe or the work of European researchers. Each chapter of this book focusses on one of the 17 SDG’s providing in-depth knowledge from a geographical perspective, fostering comprehensive research on these global targets to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change. The Sustainable Development Goals are part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. To achieve them, it will be necessary for all stakeholders, including citizens (civil society, doctors, teachers), governments, private sector to collaborate.

Contemporary immigration processes, such as forced migration and labour-induced mobility, as well as lifestyle and leisure-oriented movements, increasingly affect areas in Europe that are considered as peripheral or rural. This edited collection sheds light on the diversity of in-migration, its specific implications for development and strategies for coping. Contributions from various sub-disciplines of the social sciences, including human and cultural geography, sociology and spatial planning with different regional foci, encourage theoretical discussions, enhancing empirical knowledge and providing stimuli for practitioners involved in migration and development issues. The structure of the volume therefore follows four main themes: (1) conceptual reflections on immigration to peripheral rural areas and development prospects; (2) patterns and types of immigration processes, drawing on various case studies from all over Europe; (3) realms of integration: namely, housing, economy and social life; (4) immigration management with a special emphasis on regional and local strategies, undertaken by policy-makers, the private sector and civil society.
