Critical Approaches to Religion: Race, Class, Sexuality, and Gender provides students with carefully selected readings that examine diverse cultural religious traditions, as well as the intersection of academic religious studies and the practice of religion throughout the world. The anthology explores both mainstream religious traditions and those that are marginalized, applying theories of feminism, sexuality, race, class, and gender across the board to offer readers a broad and comprehensive understanding of global religion. Through selections authored by prolific writers in the field, coupled with insights from the editors for additional context, students learn about critical approaches to religion, the various methods of studying religion, the concept of belief, the connection of myth to ritual, the idea of mysticism, how gender and sexuality factor into religious experiences, and more. Cross-disciplinary in nature, Critical Approaches to Religion is designed to serve as a supplementary text for foundational courses in religion, world religion, anthropology, sociology, and history. Critical Approaches To Science And Religion written by Myrna Perez Sheldon and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-03-21 with Religion categories.

Critical Approaches to Science and Religion offers a new direction for scholarship on science and religion that examines social, political, and ecological concerns long part of the field but never properly centered. The works that make up this volume are not preoccupied with traditional philosophical or theological issues. Instead, the book draws on three vital schools of thought: critical race theory, feminist and queer theory, and postcolonial theory. Featuring a diverse array of contributors, it develops critical perspectives by examining how histories of empire, slavery, colonialism, and patriarchy have shaped the many relationships between science and religion in the modern era. In so doing, this book lays the groundwork for scholars interested in speaking directly to matters such as climate change, structural racism, immigration, health care, reproductive justice, and sexual identity.

Irreverence And The Sacred written by Hugh Urban and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-30 with Religion categories.

Irreverence and the Sacred brings together some of the most cutting edge, interdisciplinary, and international scholars working today in order to debate key issues in the critical and comparative study of religion. The project is inspired in large part by the work of Bruce Lincoln, whose influential and wide-ranging scholarship has consistently posed challenging, provocative, and often-irreverent questions that have really pushed the boundaries of the field of religious studies in important, sometimes controversial ways. Retracing the history of the discipline of religious studies, Lincoln argues that the field has tended to champion a "validating, feel-good" approach to religion, rather than posing more critical questions about religious claims to authority and their role in history, politics, and social change. A critical approach to the history of religions, he suggests, would focus on the human, temporal, and material aspects of phenomena that are claimed to have a superhuman, eternal, or transcendent status. This volume takes up Lincoln's challenge to "do better," by engaging in critical analyses of four key themes in the study of religion: myth, ritual, gender, and politics. The book also interrogates the "politics of scholarship" itself, critically examining the relations of power and material interests at work in the study as well as the practice of religion. The scholars involved in this project include not only some of the most important figures in the American study of religion--such as Wendy Doniger, Russell McCutcheon, Ivan Strenski, and Lincoln himself--but also European scholars whose work is hugely influential overseas but not as well known in the U.S.--such as Stefan Arvidsson, Claude Calame, Nicolas Meylan, and others.

Well-known scholars in the study of religions bring up to date and elucidate the discussion on the three most debated approaches in comparative religion, namely, the hermeneutical approach, the explanatory or cognitivist approach, and the critical approach. The approaches and methods of studying religion are disputed in an outspoken and challenging way, critically and radically arguing pros and cons. This work is unique, unrivalled, and full of essential insights into the dialogue of today and of the challenges of tomorrow.
