This edited collection brings to the forefront attempts to connect critical pedagogy and ELT (English Language Teaching) in different parts of the world. The authors in this collection write from their own experiences, giving the chapters nuanced understanding of the everyday struggles that teachers, teacher educators and researchers face within different contexts. Throughout the book, contributors connect micro-contexts (classrooms) with macro-contexts (world migration, politics and social issues) to demonstrate the impact and influences of pedagogy. In problematizing ELT and focusing on so-called ‘peripheral’ countries where educators have created their own critical pedagogies to respond to their own local realities, the contributors construct ELT in a way that goes beyond the typical ESL/EFL distinction. This unique edited collection will appeal to teacher educators, in-service teachers working in the field as well as students and scholars of English language teaching, second language acquisition and language education policy.

With a Foreword by Hugh Starkey and Audrey Osler, and Afterwords by Graham Crookes, Hilary Janks and Allan Luke, this book promotes critical language education and illustrates how a critical agenda can be enacted in English language education in real classrooms. It presents four cases located in primary and secondary schools in the province of Buenos Aires in Argentina in contexts that can be characterised as vulnerable or difficult. It describes the possibilities, challenges and limitations of this critical agenda using students’ drawings, posters, leaflets, artwork, classroom activities and conversational data as foundation, and including the voices of local teachers in their classrooms. Importantly, these teachers used teacher-made, locally produced, critical post-method materials, described by the author of those materials in one of the chapters. In this way, the book offers a unique balance of researcher, teacher and materials writer voices. These materials are included in the book and can help language teachers around the world to introduce critical perspectives in their specific contexts. The book is appealing to researchers, classroom teachers, teacher educators, and materials writers and developers interested in critical language education.

The Foreign Language Educator In Society written by Timothy G. Reagan and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-12-01 with Education categories.

This text brings together two significant domains of educational practice: foreign language education and critical pedagogy--linking them in a way that can help foreign language educators develop a critical awareness of the nature, purposes, and challenges facing foreign language pedagogy. Unique among texts in the field, this is the first to deal explicitly with the social, political, ideological, and economic aspects of language, language learning, and language teaching in our society and to connect the practice of foreign language education with these critical, and crucial, aspects of language and language use. The Foreign Language Educator in Society: Toward A Critical Pedagogy: *emphasizes what teachers and future teachers of foreign languages in this country ought to know and understand about language-- language attitudes, practices, rights, and policy-- and related issues; *focuses on helping students to move beyond pragmatic pedagogical concerns to the social and political concerns relevant to their teaching; and *provides students with the opportunity to develop critical perspectives on the central facets of the language education process. Intended for foreign language education programs at both basic and advanced levels, as well as courses in critical pedagogy, critical language awareness, sociolinguistics, and social and cultural foundations of education, the text provides helpful pedagogical features to direct the reader in applying the content of each chapter to his or her own context.

Accessible and cutting-edge, this text is a pivotal update to the field and offers a much-needed critical perspective on world language education. Building off their classic 2002 book, The Foreign Language Educator in Society, Timothy G. Reagan and Terry A. Osborn address major issues facing the world language educator today, including language myths, advocacy, the perceived and real benefits of language learning, linguistic human rights, constructivism, learning theories, language standards, monolingualism, bilingualism and multiculturalism. Organized into three parts – "Knowing Language," "Learning Language," and "Teaching Language" – this book applies a critical take on conventional wisdom on language education, evaluates social and political realities, assumptions, and controversies in the field. Each chapter includes questions for reflection and discussion to support students and educators in developing their own perspectives on teaching and learning languages. With a critical pedagogy and social justice lens, this book is ideal for scholars and students in foreign/world language education, social justice education, and language teaching methodology courses, as well as pre- and in-service teachers.

Critical language pedagogy, also sometimes referred to as critical ELT, where English is the primary language involved, has a literature in which theoretical and specialized work has outstripped more practically-oriented material. Nevertheless, even practically-oriented publications in this area tend to address the experienced, well-resourced teacher, as opposed to those beginning in this area, or those without much professional support. With a view to helping prepare second language teachers to begin to engage with critical language pedagogy, the authors of this book start from areas of conventional L2 curriculum that teachers naturally use. Each chapter presents material pertinent to areas of language, language teaching and course delivery, starting from a fairly conventional perspective. It then attempts to explain how this conception can be extended drawing upon the ideas of critical (language) pedagogy and teachers' experiences. The authors' experience of working with teachers, who work under different circumstances, in teacher education courses and workshops form key elements of the book. Teachers’ voices are also given adequate space so as to provide a comprehensive picture and situated understanding of critical language pedagogy. Dialogical engagement with the initial perspectives of beginning critical language pedagogy teachers who do not necessarily have a fully-worked out "critical philosophy of teaching" or those who wish to practice critical ELT is another feature of the book. Finally, to strengthen the practical orientation of the book, teaching strategies and extracts of materials and lesson plans are also provided.

In the context of Black Lives Matter, decolonizing initiatives, #MeToo, climate emergency protests and other movements for social and environmental justice, this volume posits a simple question: how can modern languages be taught so that they challenge rather than reinforce social inequalities? Informed by interdisciplinary theories, Critical Pedagogies for Modern Language Education focuses on practical discussions of case studies in areas directly relevant to the classroom contexts of modern languages educators. The volume transforms modern language educators and the modern language profession by putting the politics of language teaching at the centre of its analysis. With case studies covering 11 languages (Modern Standard Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Levantine, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Tamazight) across 13 countries and regions (Austria, Brazil, China, France, Italy, the Levant, Morocco, the Netherlands, Palestine, Spain, Sweden, the UK, and the USA), the contributors cover a wide range of theories, including critical discourse analysis, activist pedagogies, culturally sustaining pedagogy, linguistic justice and translanguaging. With student-teacher collaboration at its heart, critical modern languages pedagogy unmasks the ideologies and hegemonies that lie behind mainstream language use and affirms the value of minority linguistic and cultural practices. The volume thus provides transformative approaches to modern languages teaching and learning that respond to the key social concerns of the 21st century.

Service-Learning for Diverse Communities: Critical Pedagogy and Mentoring English Learners (2nd Edition) provides a foundation for understanding service-learning (SL) practices for those working with English Learners or pre-service teachers who have ELs in their classroom. Through three distinct parts, this text guides the reader through the core values of SL and provides specific examples and models of SL practices with ELs in the classroom and encourages leadership and advocacy in the school community. This book contributes to the understanding of SL models and how this educational approach to learning can enhance understanding of English Learners in the community. In this new edition, there are many critical updates to research practices and application. The book updates all chapters related to pedagogical practices, TESOL Standards, Critical Pedagogy, and Assessment. In addition to updating the TESOL Standards, the WIDA Standards have been added and incorporated into current SL practices. Two additional chapters focus on infusing technology into service-learning, discussing Digital Badging in assessment and Virtual Tutoring models. English learner needs are expanded to include Dual Language as an important model for teaching. The last chapter presents a compelling argument for instructors who utilize service-learning in their classrooms to participate in a service-learning opportunity as a student to gain insight into the student service learning experience.

Twenty years ago, this book introduced pre-service and in-service foreign language teachers to the basic concepts of critical educational study as applied to foreign language education in the United States. Since its initial publication, teachers now commonly known as world language educators are better prepared to understand issues of power in relation to, for example, language variety, language status, and language education. Indeed, much recent attention has been focused on critical approaches to language education including teaching for social justice. The author addresses issues such as the supposed "failure" of foreign language education, the educational filter role played by language classes, the concept of foreignness as seen in national standards, language curricula and textbooks, and the implications of these issues in terms of power relationships and cultural mediation both in and out of the classroom. The reader is encouraged to analyze the forms of cultural struggle that can be found within the world language classrooms of the United States including the likely impact those struggles have on members of the dominant and subordinate cultures. Two decades later, critical reflection continues to require these skills.
