Abstract: "This paper addresses the issues of analysis and design synthesis of safety-critical hard real-time systems. A design emergence model is produced that allows the safety, timing, functionality and resource usage characteristics of a proposed design to be analysed from an early stage in its development. Neighbourhood search techniques, such as Simulated Annealing and Genetic Algorithms, that allow variants of a design to be produced and analysed automatically are considered. It is argued that an appropriate design emergence model allows analysis to be extended to consider changes to a design. This design synthesis approach is at an early stage of development, a number of ways foward are investigated. The DIA (Data Interaction Architecture) is used as an exemplar parallel processing platform on which the designs would run."
