C'est encore la meme pensee qu'il exprime sous une forme allegorique, dans le passage le plus important de tous ses ouvrages, au commen cement du septieme livre de la Republique, cite deja par moi dans le troisieme livre du present ouvrage: il y dit que les hommes, solidement enchaines dans une caverne obscure, ne voient ni la veritable lumiere primitive, ni les objets reels, mais seulement la che tive lueur du feu dans la caverne et les silhouettes des objets reels qui, derriere leur dos, passent devant ce feu: ils croient neanmoins que ces ombres sont la realite, et que la vraie connaissance est la determination de la succession de ces ombres. - Cette meme verite, ex posee encore d'une tout autre maniere, forme une doc trine principale des Vedas et des Pouranas, la doctrine de Maia, par laquelle on n'entend pas autre chose que precisement ce que Kant appelle le phenomene, par opposition a la chose en soi: car l'oeuvre de Maia est presentee justement comme etant ce monde visible dans lequel nous sommes; c'est un enchantement evoque, une apparence inconsistante et en s01 inexistante, com parable aux illusions Optiques et au reve, un voile qui entoure la conscience humaine, un quelque chose dont il est egalement faux et egalement vrai de dire qu'il existe, ou qu'il n'existe pas.
