The Critique of the Quantum Power of Judgement analyzes the a priori principles which underlie the empirical knowledge provided by quantum theory. In contrast to other transcendental approaches to quantum physics, none of the transcendental principles established by Kant is modified in order to cope with the new epistemological situation that arises with the asumption of the quantum postulate. Rather, by considering Bohr’s views, it is argued that classical concepts provide the mathematical formalism of quantum theory with physical reference through symbolic analogies in the strict Kantian sense. The main result of the investigation is the determination of the highest principle under which quantum objects are subsumed. This principle states that the conditions of the possibility of the systematic unity of contextual experience are at the same time the conditions of the possibility of quantum objects. Upon this principle rests the possibility of any a priori synthetic knowledge of quantum objects. Therefore, the Critique of the Quantum Power of Judgement yields the prolegomena to any future quantum metaphysics.

In recent years, many philosophers of modern physics came to the conclusion that the problem of how objectivity is constituted (rather than merely given) can no longer be avoided, and therefore that a transcendental approach in the spirit of Kant is now philosophically relevant. The usual excuse for skipping this task is that the historical form given by Kant to transcendental epistemology has been challenged by Relativity and Quantum Physics. However, the true challenge is not to force modern physics into a rigidly construed static version of Kant’s philosophy, but to provide Kant’s method with flexibility and generality. The problem of free will is one of the oldest and most central philosophical conundrums. The contemporary debate around it has produced a range of sophisticated proposals, but shows no sign of leading to convergence. Christian Onof reviews these contemporary approaches and argues that their main shortcomings are ultimately due to paradoxical requirements on free will imposed by the naturalistic framework. Onof singles out Kant's critical solution as one that stands out among historical approaches insofar as it is based upon a rejection of this framework. By using the same methodological tool that he applies to contemporary proposals, namely a distinction between a volitional account of how we control our actions, a psychological account of the reasons for it and a metaphysical account of our status as agent, Onof shows that Kant's solution constitutes a coherent picture of free will. By exhibiting the structure running through several key publications of Kant's critical period and drawing upon unpublished notes, Onof addresses several debates which loom large in contemporary Kant literature. His exegetical work puts Kant's theory into conversation with contemporary analytic theories of free will and leads to defining a Kantian position that overcomes the issues plaguing existing approaches to the problem of free will.

By drawing some parallels between the history of ideas and literary discourses of late modernity, this book traces the influence exerted by Immanuel Kant, either directly or through the mediation of Henri Bergson’s intuitionism, Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology, Max Dessoir’s psychological aesthetics, Hans Vaihinger’s als ob fictionalism, or Karl Popper’s logical positivism. As the argument goes, background radiation of the Kantian revolution can be detected even in semiotic poetics, quantum probability, and complexity theory. An interdisciplinary approach seems appropriate when considering the works of a thinker who fused Newton’s physico-mathematics with psychology and anthropology to form a new paradigm that opened vistas to integrated disciplinary fields, such as J.F. Herbart’s psycho-physics, Wilhelm Wundt’s physiological psychology, and William James’s pragmatism. Enfolded selves, dissolution of selves into quanta of personality, and multiple hypothetical plots analogous to the Kantian thing in itself as an unfathomable matrix of possibilities are seen as latent effects of his deconstruction of rationalist metaphysics. Immanuel Kant of the Prolegomena(§ 59) emerges as the philosopher of the coastal mind, teased by the sense-world out of thought, yet not confined, but experiencing the thrill of being connected with things and possessed of the knowledge of the boundary.
