Tutt’altro, infatti, che un duro scontro polemico senza volontà d’intendersi, la celebre polemica fu una civilissima discussione tra i due maggiori interpreti della cultura liberale italiana che ancora oggi, se conosciuta a partire dai testi e dal contesto, è in grado per noi abitanti del terzo millennio di essere un punto di riferimento per schiarire e ingagliardire il concetto di libertà e la nostra stessa fragile democrazia rappresentativa. Qui, nelle pagine che seguono, la discussione tra il filosofo e l’economista è ricostruita per la prima volta nella genesi, nello sviluppo, nella conclusione e nel suo significato considerando sia i testi sia le lettere sia gli avvenimenti degli anni Venti, Trenta, Quaranta del secolo scorso in cui i veri nemici di Croce e Einaudi, e di tutti gli uomini liberi, erano le varie forme di totalitarismo, dal nazionalsocialismo tedesco al comunismo sovietico. Non mancano le sorprese, sia perché le posizioni di Croce e Einaudi sono meno distanti di quanto non si immagini, sia perché la conclusione della polemica, mai realmente considerata, appare oggi come un inedito, sia perché la polemica trova una sua composizione nella relazione tra la teoria e la pratica del liberalismo che, non casualmente, dà il titolo al libro.
