Moses e Coverley Wapshot, e le loro mogli, giungono così a Proxmire Manor e Talifer. La prima località è un archetipo dell’incubo suburbano, mentre l’altra è una vera e propria comunità della Guerra fredda, costruita attorno a una struttura di ricerca missilistica. Il classico sogno americano non poteva non degenerare in molti e differenti scandali, e tra questi anche l’avventura con un garzone italiano. Un tema questo che permette di mettere in scena lo strisciante razzismo della società americana. Nell’ossessione -repulsione per tutto ciò che è italiano, c’è forte il ricordo, e anche la nostalgia, per il periodo trascorso proprio da Cheever a Roma nel 1957, e che diventerà col tempo la matrice di diversi altri suoi racconti.
