"In brief, the COY Project was a four-year pilot project from September, 2015 to July, 2019 that set out to implement and evaluate a range of best practice options that were aimed at improving outcomes of young people who were dually involved in the child welfare and youth justice systems in Ontario. The goals of the COY Project were therefore to keep youth out of the criminal justice system, and if a youth in care is involved with the police or courts, to facilitate getting them out of the justice system, including detention, as soon as possible. The third goal was to facilitate the provision of children's services as opposed to a reliance on thejustice system to access resources" -- Executive Summary.

Abstract: The purpose of this project was to design a transitional program for emancipated crossover youth, identify potential funding sources, and write a grant application for the nonprofit agency: New Roads for New Visions. An extensive literature review identified several risk factors and outcomes with respect to crossover youth. Risk factors for becoming a crossover youth include child maltreatment, placement instability, mental health issues, and substance use. Literature on related outcomes reported difficulties with education, reliance on public welfare, mental health problems, substance use behaviors, and high recidivism rates. This proposed program will offer extensive case management services to assist crossover youth in becoming independent adults. The selected potential funding source for this grant is the Public Welfare Foundation, Inc., which promotes the rights of underprivileged populations. The implications for social work practice are provided, and the submission and/or funding of the grant was not a requirement for completion of this project.

Understanding reentry experiences after incarceration Prison in the United States often has a revolving door, with droves of formerly incarcerated people ultimately finding themselves behind bars again. In Beyond Recidivism, Andrea Leverentz, Elsa Y. Chen, and Johnna Christian bring together a leading group of interdisciplinary scholars to examine this phenomenon using several approaches to research on recently released prisoners returning to their lives. They focus on the social context of reentry and look at the stories returning prisoners tell, including such key issues as when they choose to reveal (or not) their criminal histories. Drawing on contemporary studies, contributors examine the best ideas that have emerged over the last decade to understanding the challenges prisoners face upon reentering society. Together, they present a complete picture of prisoner reentry, including real-world recommendations for policies to ensure the well-being of returning prisoners, regardless of their past mistakes.

"Crossover" Children in the Youth Justice and Child Protection Systems explores the outcomes faced by the group of children who experience involvement with both child protection and youth justice systems across several countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. Situated against a backdrop of international evidence and grounded in a two-year study with the Children’s Court in Victoria, Australia, this book presents a cohesive picture of the backgrounds, characteristics, and pathways traversed by crossover children. It presents statistical data from 300 crossover Children’s Court case files, alongside the expert evidence of 82 professionals, to generate a comprehensive picture of the lives of crossover children, and the individual and systemic challenges that they face. The book investigates the crucial question of why some children involved with child welfare systems experience particularly poor criminal justice outcomes, demonstrating how the convergence of cumulative childhood adversity, complex support needs, and systemic disadvantage produces acutely damaging outcomes for some crossover youth. It outlines the implications of the study, including how these findings might shape diversion and differential justice system responses to child protection-involved youth, and the innovative approaches adopted internationally to avert the care to custody pathway. This book is internationally relevant and will be of great interest to students and scholars of criminology and law, social work, psychology, and sociology, as well as legal, welfare, and government agencies and policy developers, non-government peak bodies and services, professional probation services, case managers, health and mental health services, disability and drug treatment agencies, and others who work with both young offenders and the design and implementation of policy and legislation.

Abstract: The purpose of this project was to develop a grant that identifies the need for services to juvenile offenders in Los Angeles. Literature reveals youth who experience trauma, neglect, and exposure to violence are at higher risk for becoming repeat offenders. The goal of the Cross-Over Youth Recidivism and Abuse Prevention program is to utilize LA County Probation Department Day Reporting Center locations to provide a mentoring service to youth that are at highest risk for recommitting crimes. The objective was to link successful graduates of the program to mentor and train newer offenders by enabling them to build support systems, learn life skills, and abuse prevention techniques. The result will be lower rates of crime and child abuse. The identified funding source for the program is the California Wellness Center. Actual submission and or funding of this grant was not required for the successful completion of this project.

Theorizing Local Migration Law And Governance written by Moritz Baumgärtel and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-09-22 with Law categories.

In many regions around the world, the governance of migration increasingly involves local authorities and actors. This edited volume introduces theoretical contributions that, departing from the 'local turn' in migration studies, highlight the distinct role that legal processes, debates, and instruments play in driving this development. Drawing on historical and contemporary case studies, it demonstrates how paying closer analytical attention to legal questions reveals the inherent tensions and contradictions of migration governance. By investigating socio-legal phenomena such as sanctuary jurisdictions, it further explores how the law structures ongoing processes of (re)scaling in this domain. Beyond offering conceptual and empirical discussions of local migration governance, this volume also directly confronts the pressing normative questions that follow from the growing involvement of local authorities and actors. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Juvenile Justice And Expressive Arts written by Carol Cross and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-06 with Social Science categories.

Juvenile Justice and Expressive Arts: Creative Disruptions through Art Programs for and with Teens in a Correctional Institution explores art programming as a sustainable educational initiative to support incarcerated teens’ successful reintegration to society. Responding to a lack of scholarly research on juvenile offenders and the role of art as education in correctional facilities, Carol Cross presents a qualitative study that examines critical pedagogy, adolescent development, and research into the governance and policies surrounding youth at a Canadian correctional facility. Through observational and interview data, action research, and visual analysis, the reader gains an insider's perspective into the lives of teens affected by crime and violence and the potential of art education to aid in increasing their self-esteem, social and emotional wellbeing, and personal development. Visual art and written stories created by male and female juvenile offenders are woven throughout the chapters to illustrate the use of creative expression as education and therapy. Suitable for scholars and researchers in juvenile justice and corrections as well as policymakers and practitioners in the field, this book will provoke dialogue on best practices for the rehabilitation and reintegration of institutionalized children and youth.
