"Richard J. Aldrich and Rory Cormac reveal the remarkable relationship between the British Royal Family and the intelligence community, from the reign of Queen Victoria, through two world wars and the Cold War, to the present day. Based on painstaking archival research, the authors have uncovered a wealth of detail that changes our understanding of the role of the monarch in modern British politics, intelligence, and international relations. Far from being a dry tome, on page after page Crown, Cloak, and Dagger offers surprising revelations and stories of intrigue. The book begins with the reign of Queen Victoria, when persistent attempts to assassinate her demanded the creation of security services. Successive queens and kings have all played an active role in steering British intelligence, sometimes running parallel networks against the wishes of prime ministers. Even today, Queen Elizabeth II receives "copy No.1" of every intelligence report and likely knows more state secrets than any person alive. This book demonstrates that even in the era of constitutional monarchy, queens and kings continue to be far more than figureheads of state. Crown, Cloak, and Dagger is a fascinating and fast-paced history that will inform as well as entertain anyone with an interest in history, espionage, and the Royal Family"--

Mission To Mao written by Sara B. Castro and has been published by Georgetown University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-03 with Political Science categories.

An innovative history of US intelligence officers on the ground and the first official contacts between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party From 1944 to 1947, the United States planted a liaison mission in the headquarters of Chinese Communist forces behind the lines. Nicknamed the "Dixie Mission," for its location in "rebel" territory, it was an interagency delegation that included intelligence officers from the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the US Army, and the State Department. Mission to Mao is a social history of the OSS officers in the field that reveals the weakness of US intelligence diplomacy in the 1940s. Drawing on over 14,000 unpublished records from five archives as well as white papers and memoirs from the participants, Sara B. Castro demonstrates how the US intelligence officers in China clashed with political appointees and Washington over the direction of the US relationship with the Chinese Communists. Interagency and political conflicts erupted over assessments of Communist capabilities and whether or not the mission would later involve operations with the Communists. Castro shows how potential benefits for the war effort were thwarted by politicization, rivalries, and the biases of US intelligence officials. Mission to Mao is a fresh look at US intelligence in WW II China and takes readers beyond the history of "China Hands" versus American anticommunists, introducing more nuance.

Watching The Jackals written by Daniela Richterova and has been published by Georgetown University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-01-02 with History categories.

The untold history of Czechoslovakia's complex relations with Middle Eastern terrorists and revolutionaries during the closing decades of the Cold War In the 1970s and 1980s, Prague became a favorite destination for the world's most prominent terrorists and revolutionaries. They arrived here to seek refuge, enjoy recreation, or hold secret meetings aimed at securing training, arms, and other forms of support. While some were welcome with open arms, others were closely watched and were eventually ousted. Watching the Jackals is the untold history of Czechoslovakia's complex relations with Middle Eastern terrorists and revolutionaries during the closing decades of the Cold War. Based on recently declassified intelligence files, Richterova unveils the story of Prague's engagement with various factions of the Palestine Liberation Organization, along with some of the era's most infamous terrorists, including Carlos the Jackal, the Munich Olympics massacre commander Abu Daoud, and the Abu Nidal Organization. In this gripping account, Richterova explains why "Cold War Jackals" gravitated toward Prague and how the country's leaders reacted to their visits, and she uncovers the role Czechoslovakia's security and intelligence apparatus – the StB (Státní bezpečnost) played in these, at times, dangerous liaisons. Drawing on interviews and remarkably detailed records from the former Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic), Richterova offers readers interested in the intelligence world a fascinating account of how states use their spies to pursue covert policies with violent nonstate actors. The book also introduces new evidence and nuances into old debates about whether the Communist Bloc supported terrorism.

Translated into English for the first time, this is a fascinating history of intelligence practices and their impact on great power rivalries in the early modern era In the sixteenth century, an intense rivalry between the Ottoman Empire and the Spanish Habsburg Empire and its allies spurred the creation of early modern intelligence. Translated into English for the first time, Emrah Safa Gürkan's Spies for the Sultan reconstructs this history of Ottoman espionage, sabotage, and bribery practices in the Mediterranean world. Then as now, collecting political, naval, military, and economic information was essential to staying one step ahead of your rivals. Porous and shifting borders, the ability to assume multiple identities, and variable allegiances made conditions in this era ripe for espionage around the Mediterranean. The Ottomans used networks of merchants, corsairs, soldiers, and other travelers to move among their enemies and report intelligence from points far and wide. The Ottoman sultans invested in the novel technologies of cryptography and stenography. Ottoman intelligence operatives not only collected information but also used disinformation, bribery, and sabotage to subvert their enemies. This history of early modern intelligence is based on extraordinary archival research in Turkey, Spain, Italy, Austria, and Croatia, and it provides important insights into the origins of modern intelligence.

To Serve In Truth Justice written by Hairat A. Balogun and has been published by AuthorHouse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-03 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This book has brought into sharp focus the parts played and contributions made to the Legal Profession in Nigeria from Independence till today by Hairat Balogun. Hers has been a Life of service, driven by truth and a commitment to Justice. Service, Truth and Justice - three words - adherence to just one of them can define someone as a person of integrity and honour; and when all three are found in one person they set that person apart as an icon, a yardstick for her peers, and a model for the generation following after. As the first lady Attorney-General of the foremost Nigerian state i.e. Lagos State, during the military regime she exhibited, for the first time, obedience of the Executive arm of government to court orders in the celebrated case of Ojukwu vs Attorney General of Lagos State and others 1986 3 NWLR (part 26) 39 Court of Appeal. She thereby laid the foundation of the precedence of putting a stop to the disobedience of court orders by the Military Government dubbed as Executive Lawlessness. The contribution of the Author to the political history of this country was appreciated by her appointment as a member of "The Transition to Civil Rule Tribunal" in 1987 by the then Military Government. I commend this book to all cadres of people, lawyers, humanists, religious people of Christian and Muslim faith as they all will find a lesson or two to learn. I particularly recommend this book to our youths i.e. pupils of secondary schools, graduates of our universities (especially lawyers) and teacher training colleges who from this book will learn the importance of hard work, dedication, honesty and loyalty which are important virtues that are gradually being eroded from our society.
