Crystals and Crystal Structures is an introductorytext for students and others who need to understand the subjectwithout necessarily becoming crystallographers. Using the book willenable students to read scientific papers and articles describing acrystal structure or use crystallographic databases with confidenceand understanding. Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the subject the bookincludes a variety of applications as diverse as the relationshipbetween physical properties and symmetry, and molecular and proteincrystallography. As well as covering the basics the book containsan introduction to areas of crystallography, such as modulatedstructures and quasicrystals, and protein crystallography, whichare the subject of important and activeresearch. A non-mathematical introduction to the key elements of thesubject Contains numerous applications across a variety ofdisciplines Includes a range of problems and exercises Clear, direct writing style "…the book contains a wealth of information and itfulfils its purpose of providing an interesting and broadintroduction to the terpenes." Excerpt from The Constitution of the Silicates From what may be called the natural history of a mineral, still another group of data can be drawn, relating to its genesis, its con stant associations, and its alterability. In this connection pseudo morphs become of the utmost interest, and, properly studied, shed much light upon otherwise obscure. Problems. An alteration product is the record of a chemical change, and as such has weight-y signifi cance. The decomposition of Spodumene into eucryptite and albite, the transformation of topaz into mica, and many like occurrences in nature, are full of meaning with reference to the problem now under consideration. Just here, however, great caution is necessary. Min era-logical literature is full'of faulty records regarding alterations, and many diagnoses need to be revised. Pseudomorphs have been named by guesses, based upon their external appearance, and often a com pact mica has been called steatite or serpentine. In every case an alteration product should be identified with extreme care, both by chemical and by microscopical methods; for without such precautions there is serious danger of error.' In each instance the supposed fact must be scrupulously verified. Closely allied to the study of natural alterations is their artificial production in the laboratory. The transformation of leucite into anal cite, and of analcite back into leucite, is a case in point, and the admi rable researches of Lemberg furnish many other examples. Work of this character is much less difficult than was formerly supposed, and its analogy to the methods of organic chemistry renders its results highly significant. Atoms, or groups of atoms, may be Split off from a mole cule and replaced by others, and the information so gained bears directly upon the question of chemical structure. With evidence of this sort relations appear which could not otherwise be recognized, and these relations may be closely correlated with observations of natural occur rences. An Introduction To Crystal Chemistry written by R. C. Evans and has been published by CUP Archive this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1966 with Science categories.

First published in 1964, as the second edition of a 1939 original, this well-known textbook presents the fundamental principles of crystal chemistry at a level that was suitable for undergraduate students of chemistry, physics, metallurgy, mineralogy and related subjects at the time of its publication. The first part deals with the general principles of crystal architecture in terms of predominant types of binding forces between the atoms themselves. There are chapters on atomic structure, and the ionic, covalent, metallic and van der Waals bonds. The second part contains a discussion of systematic crystal chemistry in which the physical and chemical properties of crystalline substances are related to their structures.
