Crystallization of Magma is one of a series of single-topic problem modules intended for use in undergraduate geology and earth science courses. Through problems and observations based on two sets of experiments, this module leads to an understanding of how an igneous rock can form from molten material. Environmental factors responsible for important variations observed in magnetic rocks are stressed. Two fundamental factors affecting or controlling the mineral composition and texture of the resulting rock (initial magma composition and cooling rate) are also stressed. In addition, reasons why scientists classify materials in general and how they classify rocks in particular are explored. However, the ability to name or identify rocks is not a necessary result of attaining the module's goals. Supplemental questions included at the end of the module may prove difficult for the average non-major; they are intended to challenge the superior student. Like other modules in the series, this module is inquiry- and problem-oriented, dealing with interdisciplinary, contemporary, and pragmatic aspects of the subject matter. It is designed to be open-ended so that ideas can be incorporated into higher level classwork. (Author/JN)

"The object of this paper is to arrive at a better explanation of the segregation of magmatic solutions on cooling. In which magmas will be discussed from a chemical and metallurgical lien of reasoning, in showing why such minerals as apatite, magnetite, etc., having a comparatively low melting point, crystallize cut before feldspar and quartz, which have a comparatively high fusion point"--Leaf [1].

This book comprehensively illustrates the elemental processes of vesiculation and crystallization recorded in volcanic products on the basis of the equilibrium and non-equilibrium theories. The book describes the derivation of equations and the basic physics behind them in detail. This textbook is fundamental in preparing for future volcanic hazards. The target readers are graduate students and researchers, but Parts I and IV are written to be understandable by undergraduate students as well, to inspire them to enter this field.

Modeling of Magmatic and Allied Processes presents methods and models for the quantification of geological processes. Conceptual models for magmatic differentiation involving crystallization and mixing are presented and applied to field and textural data. Model equations for the degree of partial melting in presence perturbations of lithospheric geotherms and partitioning of trace/radioactive elements in the matrix and melts, and the formation of continents with melt additions are described. Diverse magmatic products are shown to result from differentiation processes rather than magmatic source heterogeneities. The degree of partial melting depends on mantle temperatures, for which parameterized thermal convection models are reviewed. Perturbations in geotherms caused by mantle heat flow, CO2 flux from great depths and tectonic thrusting are analyzed. The petrogenetic significance of accessory minerals of felsic magma evolution is assessed with the help of examples from Carpathian granitoids. Methods for simulating the 3-D Concentration and Distribution Models (DC-DMs) and fractal dimension of evolving magma systems are described with examples. The use of conventional scanning electron microscopy methods and electron microprobe to characterize and infer magmatic processes is explained, and the background and economic potential of hydrothermal systems are examined. The nature of oxidizing felsic magmas along with their potential for copper mineralization is discussed. In closing, the handling, calculation and plotting of geochemical data for igneous rock suites using the R-language-based software Geochemical Data Toolkit (GCDkit) along with plug-in modules for the forward and reverse mass-balance calculation of fractional crystallization are demonstrated.

While the chemical aspects of igneous petrology have dominated research for many years, the physical processes associated with the generation, transport, and crystallization of magma have been somewhat neglected. Here a group of distinguished scientists, whose current research embraces both chemical and physical aspects of the field, illustrates these new directions in igneous petrology. Originally published in 1980. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.

As part of a larger project to understand mid ocean ridge systematics and the accretion of oceanic crust, this study will focus on the Galapagos Spreading Center (GSC) and the interaction of the Galapagos plume with mid-ocean ridge processes. Glasses data from along the GSC were used to calculate pressures of partial crystallization using the Kelley and Barton method (2008) that can then be related to depths within the Earth. Depending on the range of pressures of crystallization, models of crustal accretion can then be interpreted from the results. Pressure results can also be related to chemistry along the ridge to further understand how pressures can relate to the Galapagos plume, transform faulting and propagating tips. Chemistry shows the Galapagos plume to affect the GSC from 95.5°W and 86.5°W. Calculated pressures range from east to west along the GSC. The western GSC yields an average pressure of 160 MPa which correlates to 5.6 km into the crust. The central GSC, including plume affected ridge, yields an average pressure of 260 MPa. This correlates to a depth of 9.1 km in the crust. The western GSC yields an average pressure of 172 MPa which correlates to 6 km within the crust. Overall, these average pressures are within range of a 10 km thick crust. However, individual glass results yield a maximum pressure of ~820 MPa. This pressure would correspond to depths that extend into the mantle. Higher pressure results can be explained by crustal-magma processes such as assimilation or magmatic processes such as mixing. K2O vs. P2O5 (wt. %) diagrams suggest that there are mantle heterogeneities along the ridge. This paper will discuss and interpret the results of these high pressures and correlate high-pressure results to chemistry as well as geologic location.
